new to win7 : random BSOD events / sf zip attached

What you say makes total sense and I appreciate your kandor.

So: a 400 watt unit should suffice?

Thanks again,

All the BSODs relate to memory. It's tough to diagnose the exact problem because the last dump indicates a Page Table Entry or the Index is corrupt when Chrome tried to release it. It could have been over-written by a faulty driver, an errant program (malware) or memory itself could be faulty. It could be low voltage but before replacing parts, perhaps some tests might help.

If you are overclocking the processor or memory, stop until the problem can be identified.

Run a full scan with your antivirus after making sure it is updated. A stand alone scan is also advisable--Such as the free version of MBAM.

Run SFC /scannow from an elevated command prompt and report back with any error messages.

Test memory with Memtest86+ following the suggestions in the link. (Over night is best.)

And some info on your memory modules might help. Make, model, speed, etc.

I will say that even if the memory is the culprit, no system should ever be subjected to a PSU like that.

Hi there Carwiz

1) nothing is on overclock

2) memtest 86 + did not provide any errors (see one of previous messages) I can always run another test though

3) mbam is a program I run every three days or so, never had any infections on any of my machines, will run today

4) I'll run the sfc/scannow and report back

Thanks!

I never give hardware purchasing advise but you're probably right. A weak or floating (voltage) PSU can reek havoc on the system. I looked for power specs on the OP's 8400CS video card but couldn't find anything. Does it draw power through the PCI buss or does it connect to the PSU? 400W is mighty slim power these days.

It's not a matter of the PSU's capacity, but the quality of its power delivery. Diablotek PSUs are regarded as being "avoid at all costs" type of PSUs. I don't see myself as a real PSU expert, but I know that if you were to ask one what they thought of Diablotek PSUs, then they would quickly tell you to stay away from them! Based on what I've heard about Diablotek PSUs over the past 4 years, I wouldn't even trust one in a simple office computer. I shudder when I think of using one. They're inexpensive for very good reasons: the quality of the internal components is horrible.

For his system with the 8400GS, a quality-made 400W PSU like the Antec NEO ECO is overkill. The 8400GS is basically one small step up from onboard video. It's a weak card.

I think you missed a step somewhere in the SFC procedure but that's ok. It appears the errors are status errors on a number of Windows updates. Either they "Failed" or the status indicator is corrupt. You might scan your update history and see if any are marked Failed. I just grabbed the last one that happens to be a critical security update (KB2661254) but there many more. Most appear to be MSE or security updates. I'm not sure how the log would get corrupted but some malware apps try to block updates.

Have you re-installed or repair-installed the OS recently? Just thinking of ways that the update log got hosed but memory errors sure can be one of them. Bad memory makes bad disk files too.

1) mbam came back clean

2) sfc scannow came back clean (ran that one first)

3) sfc verifyonly gave me the error log = CBS log

4) all windows updates show "successfull"

5) OS was reinstalled (clean install) around 01/22/2013, about a month after I got the machine and the first BSOD's sarted happening

Hope this helps, thanks!

All valid points TC. I just like to see something before condemning hardware. Perhaps some voltage readings? I happen to use HWiNFO64 but I have an Intel/Intel machine. Not sure of it's accuracy with other Processors and Mobos. It has logging capabilities that will show voltage fluctuations during use. Something similar would go a long way toward "proof".

We'd need actual PSU testing equipment because software isn't going to cut it (not even the BIOS readings should be trusted). In the meantime, I'll ask for the real PSU expert's opinions on this PSU and post when I have enough.

I've never seen any PSU experts say anything but really bad things about Diablotek PSUs. It's usually, "avoid at all costs".
