Win7 x64 Freezing on windows start

    Hi there!
    First post:

I've been running win7 x64 for some months now and it has worked beautifully up until tonight, when I had to change homegroups to be able to connect to the printer that we use on another computer. Immediately after I connected to the new homegroup (or rather a few seconds later) the computer froze up totally, no mouse/keyboard and the clock stopped ticking. -Had to manually reboot.

Eventviewer gave me a TON of errors, mainly EventID 7001, but also a few others:

    7001:
The Computer Browser service depends on the Server service which failed to start because of the following error:
The dependency service or group failed to start.

    10005:
DCOM got error "1084" attempting to start the service ShellHWDetection with arguments "" in order to run the server:
    {DD522ACC-F821-461A-A407-50B198B896DC}

    6000:
The winlogon notification subscriber <GPClient> was unavailable to handle a notification event.

    1101:
Audit events have been dropped by the transport. 0

    7026:
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
    aswSP
    discache

-I also noticed a few errors pointing towards DaemonTools, which I promptly uninstalled.

System starts up just fine in safemode w networking (gotta love 640x480)
    running chkdsk finds no errors
system temp is great (about 35 degrees C with a cpu temp of about 40 degrees)

    Any ideas?

    O

it looks like the event ID's are related to network logon. have you tried booting in your normal workgroup/homegroup?

One thing you can do safaely is to run a system file check by going to start>search>cmd>right click run as admin>sfc /scannow.
    \
this verifies and repair system files

    let us know the result

    C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
    Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

-About the workgroup / homegroup: The weird thing is that it IS my default homegroup, that for some reason just stopped working, so I disconnected from it and then reconnected again with an updated homegroup password, that's when the problems started (sorry about previously saying that i _changed_ homegroup).

Anyways, I set about uninstalling Avast antivirus, just to make sure: no difference.

-Popped a D-link DFE530-TX nic in there and abandoned the onboard Atheros L1 Gigabit ethernet adapter, and that did the trick. However, I hate not solving the root of the problem so I'd much appreciate further ideas.

The startup this morning (not using the Atheros adapter) generated the following eventlogs:
    1x Warning EventID 3036:
The content source <csc://{S-1-5-21-1089530965-4074727007-372755074-1000}/> cannot be accessed.

    Context: Application, SystemIndex Catalog

    Details:
The URL was already processed during this update. If you received this message while processing alerts, then the alerts are redundant, or else Modify should be used instead of Add. (HRESULT : 0x80040d0d) (0x80040d0d)

    1x Warning EventID 6016:
Express Writer error: failed while adding express writers from directory System.

    Operation:
    Initializing Writer
    Gathering Writer Data
    Executing Asynchronous Operation

    Context:
    File Path: C:\Windows\Vss\Writers\System\
    Execution Context: Requestor
    Current State: GatherWriterMetadata

    Error-specific details:
Error: CreateFile("75DFB225-E2E4-4d39-9AC9-FFAFF65DDF06.xml"), 0x80070002, The system cannot find the file specified.

    1x Error EventID 1101:
Audit events have been dropped by the transport. 0

-So the TONS of errors flooding in with the onboard-adapter has stopped, though it doesnt explain why it worked flawlessly until one day ago without any driverchanges / software irregularities or any hardware being changed.
