I have a question: did you flash to the new BIOS first before doing Startup Repair within Startup Repair etc.? If so, then I think that was what solved it. If not, then you are one amazing magician. You should start a world tour!

Of course. AND, I downloaded the 1703 Crosshair V BIOS (latest) from the ASUS site, again, and burned another ISO which I copied to a reformatted usb thumb drive.did you flash to the new BIOS first before doing Startup Repair within Startup Repair etc.?
My OCD knows no limits.
Now I shall reboot, having used Ccleaner as always, and see if it comes back up without a hitch.

Just did so and am reporting back:
When I told it to reboot, it again came up with the "Insert Proper Boot Device ...."
So I put the Win7 Installation Disk in the drive. Hit return. And it came up into Windows without going into setup.
Does this make any sense to anyone? The only conclusion I can reach is the kernel is corrupted.

This has got to be a BIOS problem. Any chance the latest BIOS (1703) from ASUS is buggy? (not out of the realm of possibilities since I found the SATA numbering on two different ASUS motherboard diagrams to be incorrect)
All I know is this computer will boot up nicely - if and only if I leave the OS setup disk in the drive. It comes to "Press any key to boot from the cd/dvd rom"; I do nothing but sit and wait and it boots up nicely on its own. Weird.
Now I've been setting boot priorities in the BIOS for many, many years. For some reason, however, this time it seems that instead of moving from CD/DVD to SSD, the BIOS needs the setup DVD to remain in the drive -or- it cannot move to the SSD to boot up from the Bootmgr.
I don't think the OS is corrupted or the Bootmgr is missing. I think this particular #1703 BIOS is strange.

Dennis, would you explain the menu you got up that asked which OS you wanted to boot into? That sounds as though it is in a dual boot scnerio. Get into the os, hold down the windows key (the one with the flag on it) and press R. That should bring up a search box similar to XP, type msconfig and press OK. Go to the boot tab and tell us what you see.

Steve, I really appreciate your hanging in there.
Here's what I have done:
1) Changed the BIOS to #1605 (prior to #1703) which is a bit older
2) When I went back into the BIOS upon reboot (need to push F1), I set to "optimize settings"; rebooted; went back into the BIOS and changed things to be as they should (CD --> SSD); Odd thing is I was given a choice between UEFI and P4 ATAP (optical); I chose P4 because it was the only one listed in the optical drive menu; Saved those settings; Also, (SATA 1-4 AHCI; 5,6 IDE)
3) Rebooted with setup disk in drive; Sat and waited and it came up into Windows as it did before
4) OK, since I have tried both the newest and one prior to the newest BIOS and still had the same need to keep the install disk in the drive to boot up, I figured the problem was the BIOS couldn't find the Boot Loader in the SSD
5) So I applied my world famous Digital Decision Tree Logic and hence decided to "upgrade" Win7 within Win7 - hoping to clean things up a bit.
In the process of upgrading Win7 now. Still haven't purchased that high caliber weapon yet to fix the problem permanently.

You may recall that I said the das mechanical keyboard would not work when typing into the C prompt.did you use the FixMBR and FixBoot commands?
Finishing the reinstall (upgrade) of Win 7 and will let you guys know.
