    Multiple BSOD with no apparent pattern/reason


    I've been getting the BSOD for weeks at very random times. I cannot find a common pattern to the BSOD as the error messages I receive seem to differ time after time. I've tried to do a lot of research via the web to try and solve the issue myself, but to no avail.

    Most recently I've seen SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION as the BSOD error.

    Analysis with WhoCrashed reveals issues with the ntoskrnl.exe module on my computer after BSOD. Thinking there was something wrong/corrupted with Windows 7, I've did a fresh re-install of Windows 7 (backed up files, did a complete reformat of hard drive, reloaded a fresh copy of Windows 7). Unfortunately the BSOD reappeared within 24 hours of the re-install.

    As I see it, there are two options: 1) configuration issues that keep reoccurring i.e. driver incompatibility or 2) hardware failure issues

    To try to solve a configuration/driver issues, I've worked to update all the drivers that I can find for my system, as well as all software and anything else I can think to update. No luck in solving the problem. The BSOD reappears every few days. I've searched the web trying to find driver incompatibility issues, but haven't been able to nail anything down.

    This leads me to believe it is a hardware issue. So I've run Memtest86 for eight passes (for several hours) and found no errors in memory. I also ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic with the Extended setting for seven passes and also found no errors with the memory. I can't imagine it being a hard drive issue as I would assume any corrupted files in bad sectors would be moved to a different part of the hard drive after a complete reformat and re-install of the OS. Is there a way to test the processor? Graphics card? What else hardware wise could cause so may different errors with a BSOD?

    I need some more help...

    Gateway GT5678
    Windows 7 Professional 64-bit with SP1
    4.00 GB RAM
    2.4 GHz quad core Intel Core2 processor
    AMD ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT display adapter
    700 GB Hard drive

    The display driver is very old.

    Update your ATI/AMD display driver.
    You can get it from the link in our forum, Latest AMD Catalyst Video Driver for Windows 7, or you may go to AMD Graphics Driver and Software and opt for Automatically Detect and Install the appropriate driver for your card.


    If failed, search in Gateway Support - Downloads & Support Documents - Desktop / GT Series / GT5678

    During installation, you may opt for advanced installation, and install the display driver only, not the Catalyst Control Center.

    Also, try it: Stop error code 0x0000003B (SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION) on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 when you use some IEEE 1394 devices

    Look at the BIOS ....

    Firstly please either uninstall / reinstall all GFI Anti-virus Software as it is contributing to your crashes.

    Fauting driver: sbapifs.sys (GFI ActiveProtection Filter, GFI Software).

    As an alternative install Microsoft Security Essentials.
    Recommended from a strict BSOD perspective, compatibility & stability
    compared to other antiviruses/internet security software.

    Please run SFC to check the integrity of all Windows 7 system files:

    Click on the Start > Type in search cmd
    Right click cmd at top and Run as Administrator
    Type SFC /scannow at the prompt (note the space between SFC and /scannow)

    From your error logs seems you have a bad block on Hard drive 1, is this a fixed disk? Try chkdsk and it may be worth while to download testing software from your hard drive manufacturer, and test the disk.

    To Run chkdsk /f/r in an elevated command prompt.

    Click on the Start > Type in search cmd
    Right click cmd at top and Run as Administrator
    At the command prompt please type: chkdsk /f/r
    (Note: there is a space between chkdsk and /f/r)

    Please update the drivers for these devices as the are very old.

    UPDATE: I updated the older drivers in question with the newest ones I could find on the web. I also found an update for the BIOS from Gateway and flashed the newer BIOS.

    I uninstalled and re-installed Vipre.

    I also ran SFC, which reported that everything was OK. Ran CheckDisk and things seemed OK as well. CheckDisk found some un-allocated space that it said was reallocated and things seemed OK from the CheckDisk perspective... FYI the hard drive is a fixed disk (if by fixed disk you mean large drive "permanently" installed in the computer).

    After a few hours of scanning and updating the system seems to be running well. No BSOD yet, though often my computer will go days without a BSOD. I will keep you posted.

    Had another BSOD event. I don't know a lot of the details as I wasn't using the computer when it happened. But I uploaded the dump files with the hope of getting some more help...

    As i stated in my post above, your system is crashing due to:

    Fauting driver: sbapifs.sys (GFI ActiveProtection Filter, GFI Software).

    Seems now you need to Uninstall this software.
