BSoD sometimes when loading and closing games, not during
Hello, everyone,
I'll try to give as much information as I can in the first post to make this as, hopefully, easy as possible.
Like the title says, I get a BSoD occasionally when I try to start playing a game or when I try to close a game. From what I can recall, I have not had an actual BSoD while actively playing a game. Additionally, this only seems to happen with games I have on Steam, although I may not be remembering perfectly. Specifically speaking, when I double click on a shortcut for a Steam game, double click the name of a game in the Steam client, X out of a game or properly exit from a game through a menu, I get the BSoD.
Unfortunately, I do not have all of the log files from my previous crashes, only the most recent one, from today. From what I can remember, they haven't all been the same .dll error. I commonly see win32k, like today, but I have seen at least 4 other exception errors previously.
The BSoDs are very sporadic. Sometimes I can go several weeks without having one, sometimes I have 3 or more in a day. I've had them happen from several different games on Steam now, and even that isn't consistent. Today it happened with Torchlight 2; when I rebooted I tried loading the game again and did so without issue. When I reformatted my computer several months ago, I also had a few BSoD when installing games to my secondary hard drive, through Steam as well as other methods (other distribution clients, CDs, etc.). However, I have not had that issue when recently installing new games and other programs to my secondary drive. The only time I get BSoD errors is occasionally when opening and closing games, as I described above.
I was using this same setup, mostly, for years without problems before now. I was using all of the new hardware, minus the second hard drive, for about 5-6 months prior to my reformat and the BSoD issues, and had no such problems. In that time I have added a lot more software, specifically games, going from maybe 100 GB of games to close to 1000 GBs. There are four hardware changes/additions I have made in that time that may be of concern:
1) I recently reconnected my printer, which I had not used for a year and a half but otherwise used previously with no issues. It is a Samsung ML-1630.
2) I upgraded my video card from a, I believe, nVidia GeForce 9800 GTX to a nVidia GeForce 550 TI GTX.
3) I added more RAM to my system. I previously had 2x2 GB sticks and I bought 2x4 GB sticks that I added to the system. I don't recall the exact specs, but when I ordered them I looked at my motherboard as well as the current RAM I had and made sure everything matched up; voltage, RAM speed, etc. Everything should be the same other than the capacity, unless I messed up or missed something somewhere.
4) I added a second hard drive. It's a SATA3, I believe, and my motherboard doesn't support SATA3 directly, but I read that it was compatible using an older SATA cable, it just wouldn't get the SATA3 transfer speeds.
Each time I've had the BSoD issue I have gone online and looked for solutions. I read a lot of people saying to run a stresstest on my video card, like with Furmark, to run MemTest86+, I think it's called, to run a chkdsk, etc.
When I ran Furmark I let it run for 15 minutes or so. The temperature peaked at 84 degrees Celsius. I had no artifacts during the test, I didn't crash, no issues at all that I could tell.
I ran MemTest86+ for about 8 hours overnight while I slept. In that time it completed 4 passes and was working on the 5th. No errors were found from that scan.
I ran chkdsk a few times on my primary HD and my secondary HD(USB drive is not currently used.). There was not an instance where the primary drive was found to have any issues. The secondary drive, however, and this is the drive containing my Steam installation as well as my games from Steam, has had errors a few times, which chkdsk said it fixed every time.
Off the top of my head that is all of the information I can provide right now. Let me know if I missed something important or critical to the assistance of solving my problem and I will provide the additional information ASAP.
