Windows 7: BSOD when running games, 0x116

BSOD when running games, 0x116

Recently whenever the computer is running any full screen games (Dawn of War/League of Legends), within 5-10 minutes a BSOD will occur. Only very rarely does the computer crash when using the computer for other tasks such as browsing.

Initially I dusted the computer components. This stopped the crashes for about two weeks but the crashes resumed afterwards.

Whocrashed stated that:
Code:
On Thu 11/04/2013 5:06:21 a.m. GMT your computer crashed
crash dump file: C:\Windows\memory.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: nvlddmkm.sys (0xFFFFF8800FBCA0C0)
Bugcheck code: 0x116 (0xFFFFFA8005E6D1F0, 0xFFFFF8800FBCA0C0, 0x0, 0x2)
Error: VIDEO_TDR_ERROR
file path: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\nvlddmkm.sys
product: NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 314.22
company: NVIDIA Corporation
description: NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 314.22
Bug check description: This indicates that an attempt to reset the display driver and recover from a timeout failed.
A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error. It is suggested you look for an update for the following driver: nvlddmkm.sys (NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 314.22 , NVIDIA Corporation).
Google query: NVIDIA Corporation VIDEO_TDR_ERROR
I then tried several things mentioned in other 0x116 help threads.
- updated all hardware drivers using DriverReviver
- cleaned the registry using RegistryReviver
- ran chkdsk --> clean result.

Even when the computer has just been turned on and started running a game, the computer will crash despite being cold to touch.

When mentioned to my friends, they said that my video card's age (4 years) might be a factor.

Any help will be appreciated.

Hi kastark

Looking at your attachment . It is missing the dmp file.

Take a look at the tutorial below. Make sure you click on Grab All button on the tool

Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions

Recommendation :

Uninstall Daemon Tools Lite . That does cause a few BSOD seen a few inside the forum .

If you have the most current Nvidia Driver than try rolling back to the previous driver

Note   Note
I didn't give you the driver version of 314.21 or 314.14 cause they were in BETA so I gave you the one that was released and is WHQL

information   Information
WHQL stands for Windows Hardware Quality Labs

I don't see you running any Antivirus programs on the PC. Just to see if we have any friends hiding around. Just a thought to open up a thread inside System Security just to see if you're free of Viruses and Adware

Thank you for the quick response.

As per your suggestion, I:
- uninstalled daemon tools lite.
- downloaded and installed version 314.07 for my nvidia 9800gt video card.
- ran a system scan using microsoft security essentials.

After rebooting, a test run for playing a game still resulted in a crash.
Code:
On Thu 18/04/2013 12:02:22 a.m. GMT your computer crashed
crash dump file: C:\Windows\Minidump\041813-14929-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: nvlddmkm.sys (0xFFFFF8800499C198)
Bugcheck code: 0x117 (0xFFFFFA800660B010, 0xFFFFF8800499C198, 0x0, 0x0)

This time however, the error code displayed was 0x117.

Sorry about that.
When using the "Grab All" function, the dump file would not appear in the folder despite the success confirmation. I had to manually select the "Minidump" option in the diagnostic tool.
Reattached the zip file, this time including the dump file.

Hi Kastark

The BSOD 0x117 is a VIDEO_TDR_TIMEOUT_DETECTED

Uninstall the Nvidia driver . Take a look at the link below

Drivers - Clean Left over Files after Uninstalling

Then reinstall the 314.22 drivers

When you ran a scan with MSE did it locate anything ? If it located anything please open a new Thread inside System Security .

There is no malware detected by MSE so far using quick scan. I will rescan the computer using full scan mode.

Is this a custom built desktop machine?
I am not sure. When I bought the computer (second hand) some time last year, the seller stated that the computer was prebuilt when originally bought. The first owner had replaced original cooler and video card to the current specifications. Due to my lack of tech-savviness, I have not altered any components.

The installation is for a ACER/GATEWAY/PACKARD OEM, and the only way it can be activated on a retail motherboard (Gigabyte in your case) is by means of a hackers activation exploit.

Unfortunately, we can't provide assistance for counterfeit installation. My best recommendation is to purchase a genuine Windows 7 Home Premium licence and reinstall Windows.

I was unaware that the current Windows installation was counterfeit. It may take me some time to purchase a valid Windows so this thread should be locked.

In any case, thank you VistaKing and Golden for the help provided so far.
