BSOD + Does Not Boot, Does Not Repair, Does Not Restore
On a rather good home computer, about a week ago, I came home after leaving the computer on all day to find that it was sitting at a black screen, non-responsive. I waited for a little bit then hard-booted it so that I could start doing whatever I wanted to do that particular day. However, as the computer was booting Windows 7 it hit a BSOD. Since then, Windows 7 has not worked at all on this computer. When it starts to boot, it immediately skips from "Starting Windows" to an automatic repair function, which always says that it has failed to automatically repair.
Things that I tried already:
- Windows's automatic repair (It does not succeed in doing anything, I told it to send a report to Microsoft about 5 times)
- Booting to the Install Disk that installed windows on this computer, and activating it's Automatic Repair feature. That also did not work.
- Using System Restore from the Install Disk. The first time it said "System restore was unable to complete successfully, your files have not been changed..." and something about an error. Other attempts to do System Restore, on other Restore Points (it tells me that I have 6 of them) mostly crashed immediately, saying "rstrui.exe - Application Error" and some technical stuff.
- "Boot Using Last Good Configuration" - This just went to "Starting Windows", played half of the little graphic, then gave a BSOD.
- "sfc /scannow" command in offline mode or whatever, run from Windows 7 Install Disk. I got the impression it couldn't fix anything.
The computer has been broken for several days, and I would like to fix it. It has 650ish GB of installed programs and personal data on its hard drive, which I managed to back up to an external drive using linux. As far as I can tell (i.e. judging by the fact that an old wubi ubuntu installation made on a whim half a year ago boots fine), there's really nothing wrong with this computer's hardware -- simply, Windows has gone haywire.
Some of the programs on this computer's hard drive, like Autodesk Inventor, take hours to install because of security keys and rights and such. I understand that one option for me is to format the hard drive and re-install Windows 7 using the disk, but I would like to avoid doing so if at all possible.
So, I came here to see if someone could help. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Edit: I saw the BSOD Posting Instructions, but am not quite sure how to follow them in Ubuntu. I was left reckoning that I couldn't download and run an EXE in an environment that doesn't run EXEs. I'll update here if I get that figured out.
