Windows 7: Software- or Configuration-related Crashes

Update

I ran Ubuntu for some days with no crashes. I didn't care for the impenetrable GUI and I'm too old, tired, and busy to re-connect the linux synapses in my brain. I gutted the pc. I got in a new mainboard and a blindingly fast Core i5 CPU and rebuilt the thing. It's rain fine ever since. I don't get it, but I'm not an engineer so I'll have to live with it. As foreshadowed, I upgraded my younger son's pc. I gave him the m/board and cpu and half the RAM (I didn't need 16 GB after all). Guess what: it's crashing. I'll give a re-install a go but if that doesn't work, the m/board is getting tossed.

Thank you for your advice and suggestions. I'd have been lost otherwise. Your work is truly appreciated.

As I had a feeling. Bad mobos are a bugger to figure out and usually people are hesitant on replacing them because of all the work that goes into doing so. It's unfortunate on what you had to do to make things happen ok, but at least it appears to be discovered and worked out. Hope the new system turns out well.

You can mark this thread as solved for future reference at your discretion.
