Open the computer. Clean the inside carefully again .... specially the fan grills and air vents. When reseating, apply new thermal paste to the CPU. If you cannot do it yourself, take help of someone who can do it, but for a computer as old as your, overheating is all possible, and dried thermal paste is the most common cause of it.

Had this process done on Friday, and so far my computer has had no issues. I'll give it another couple of days, if there are any other hiccups i'll report back. For now, however, the issue seems to have been resolved.
