Couple of things, firstly I don't run System Restore as it interferes negatively with a certain software program that I need to run and the vendor advises not to run System Restore (I never found it very useful anyway in the past for solving problems). So I can't try out your suggestion, sorry.

On your second point, what exactly would I be doing in BIOS? Where in BIOS would the Marvell setting be? Is it the same as what I did previously, which was (in BIOS at startup) to go into Advanced/Onboard Devices Configuration/Marvell 9128 controller, which has three options, DIsabled, IDE mode or AHCI mode. That's not a part of BIOS I normally visit so I hadn't thought to look at the AHCI setting to see it had somehow got changed to IDE.

Thanks for the links - I'll try that and see if the USB works any better than the driver that under a previous Win7 installation Windows tried to install from the Asus website without success. For installing the Marvell controller, bearing in mind it controls the drive with the OS, are there any special precautions I need to take with it or is it a case simply of downloading the driver, running it and rebooting?

I have an Asus P6X58DE motherboard, the (desktop tower) computer was built by a generic PC company that specialises in fast gaming machines. Quite a high spec machine (24GB RAM, 6 core i7 processor, 256GB SSD as primary disk, 1TB secondary disk) but annoyingly for me it not infrequently causes me problems like today's of converting the BIOS from IDE to AHCI. Before I fitted the SSD I had two identical 1TB disks and tried both RAID0 and RAID1 configurations but the Intel RAID controller kept sabotaging things, ending up by corrupting the MBR and I gave up with RAID in the end. I might one day get around to trying to flash the BIOS but I guess it's a case of if it ain't broke don't try to fix. I have no idea why the BIOS ROM wouldn't install from a FAT16 or FAT32 formatted USB stick, I'll have to see if it can be flashed from within Windows, I have a feeling that might be possible.

Simply because I wasn't aware it was on the Asus website!

Thanks, I'll go ahead with installing the ATA drivers (though the RAID storage isn't really relevant now that I have an SSD).
