On your second point, what exactly would I be doing in BIOS? Where in BIOS would the Marvell setting be? Is it the same as what I did previously, which was (in BIOS at startup) to go into Advanced/Onboard Devices Configuration/Marvell 9128 controller, which has three options, DIsabled, IDE mode or AHCI mode. That's not a part of BIOS I normally visit so I hadn't thought to look at the AHCI setting to see it had somehow got changed to IDE.
