Trouble at startup

Hello good people,

I'm having trouble at computer start up.

At stsrt up the computer is running through all it's stuff before loading windows and when it gets to the black screen that shows "Verifying DMI Pool Data.................." there is a return and then this message "Detecting DRAM size" then the machine restarts and goes through this exact scenario three times, then on the fourth, Windows loads and away we go although the machine is laggy and slower.

This has just started to happen, usually when the Verifying DMI POOL DATA appears there is a cursor return which blinks and then Windows loads.

Does anyone have an idea on what might be happening in this instance?

Thanks for your help

James

OOPS, sorry about the thread title

I noticed you had a single crashdump from a BSOD that was dated today. I took a look and it does match up with my hypothesis. It crashed because an I/O device (most often the system drive) reported an I/O error and could not complete the intended operation.

This somewhat coincides with the sluggishness of the system and the difficulty starting up. The drive is experiencing unusually high error rate, and is repeating I/O requests over and over in an attempt to succeed.

I notice you have an OCZ drive or two. OCZ has a notorious reputation for being very unstable in comparison to other competitors in the SSD industry. When you buy from them, you are getting only speed, no reliability. Keep that in mind. If you want to go for reliability, Samsung, Intel and Crucial are top notch in that arena (avoid Sandforce controller drives). MLCs (Multi-Level Cell) drives are also more reliable and last longer than TLCs (Triple-Level Cell), and SLCs (Single Level Cell) are even better (though quite expensive).

Nevertheless, if you can, I recommend you find any firmware updates for your OCZ drives and install them immediately. Firmware updates are absolutely crucial and are the first thing to do when installing any SSD variant from any brand. It is also important you finish this up with a BIOS update as well as that can interfere.

After that, I recommend doing the following:

Drives: Seatools - All basic tests aside from the Fix all, Long generic or the advanced ones. Also provide us a screenshot of CrystalDiskInfo output.

Thanks for your reply and help Vir,

I have included another dump along with a screen shot of CrystalDiskInfo. I had trouble getting seatools to start up, computer kept blue screening, eventually got ST to load but it stalled on the DSt test, just wouldn't get to the end of it.

I have ordered a Samsung 840pro, if I clone this Vertex and transfer to the Samsung will I clone all the bad stuff and have the Samsung blue screening as well.

Thanks for your help, I hope you can look at the new dump files for me .

Cheers

James

Yeah, same exact problem for the other crashdumps, I/O failure from a drive. What drive did it stall on for the DST test?

it stalled on the Revo drive and the Vertex 4 OS drive

I sure hope both drives aren't bad

Again, look for and install any firmware updates available for them, as well as any BIOS and chipset driver updates for your motherboard as well.

Yeah, I have updated firmware for the drives done a bios update and have the most recent chipset for the board. Do you think its a drive causing the grief of my operating system? Just wondering if I clone this drive to a new one I'll take the problem across

Thanks for your help
Cheers

James

It may cause a problem as the clone won't be clean or will fail to clone, because if the drive has problem reading sectors, it's either going to skip them or fail the procedure when touching them. Some cloning software like Clonezilla can be set to be less paranoid at the event of hitting a bad sector, but it still doesn't mean the data in that bad sector's going to be able to be pulled and copied over, resulting in broken files and most likely a broken Windows installation.
