    BS0D Win7 Ultimate 64bit Signature Edition

    Hi everyone,

I recently (> 1 week) built a new PC, and am having some issues.

I have had 8 BSOD's in the last couple of days. They all occurred during moderate usage of the computer. All have occurred during booting up or coming out of sleep mode. I downloaded the latest Mobo BIOS. Double checked most drivers. I have eliminated the PSU, was using a 550w while waiting for the one listed below and encountering the same issue. I eliminated the VGA, I double checked using the integrated VGA on the Mobo and similar problem occurred. I have reformatted after eliminating those possible hardware causes and do not have those dumps, but I will include the 2 new dumps since reformatting.

I did run the MDSched and got 1 error. I discovered that 1 of the 2 sticks of ram was bad. I have 1 stick running the system 2gig and still getting the BSOD's. I have RMA (RAM) replacement on the way.

I have the dumps and was very much hoping someone could help and tell me the name of the driver file that's malfunctioning, if it is one, and i can then either find a replacement driver or at worst a replacement part.

I am OC'ing the RAM as per instruction from Gskill tech support. That is the only thing OC'd. My CPU temp is running cool between 33c to 41c. I do not plan to do any heavy gaming and using just one VGA.

    My hardware is as follows:

Also, when I do power up, I noticed a slight flicker in the welcome screen before going to the desktop. My first guess before trouble shooting was the VGA. I have read most thread in regards to the BSOD's on here and MS tech support site as well.

    Thanks, Tony

Both crashes occurred in low-level memory handling routines, but then since you're overclocking and mdsched already reported errors that is not surprising.

I'm not sure how a company can provide instructions to "overclock" their stuff. Surely there are some legal issues there. It would be like BMW supplying new owners with instructions as to how to disable the redline rev limiter.

I am not sure what you mean, low-level memory handling routines? The board is capable of handling DDR3 1600 RAM. I talked to both ASUS and GSkill about the timings etc, the BIOS has auto detect or manual which I used the later to set the timmings to the RAM and tweak the voltage. The ASUS manul has the RAM as being supported by the board. Are you saying the crashes are direct result of the RAM with both those dumps? Should I set the bios to Auto Detect or? I seen others OC their with no reported problems. I am doing as much research as I can to help fix this. I have been using Win 7 RC on two (HTPC and the Wife's) newly built machines with no problems.

If you want a stable system, my suggestion is to stay away from overclocking. To put it another way, troubleshooting crashes while components of the system remain overclocked is almost entirely pointless because it's virtually impossible to rule out the overclocking as the cause of the crash.

"Low-level memory handling routines" = those portions of the OS which are responsible for dealing with physical memory and the translation between the physical and virtual memory references. In both instances, your machine crashed in parts of the OS which work with memory.

Are you saying the crashes are direct result of the RAM with both those dumps?
No, I cannot be certain of that because minidumps do not offer information on that level. However, the fact that MDSCHED has found a problem can be considered authoritative.

Should I set the bios to Auto Detect or? I seen others OC their with no reported problems.
Yes, "auto" (without overclocking) would be my recommendation.

Ok, will do. I am going to set it to Auto, but will that mean the RAM will not perform at the 1600 speeds?

I had a quick look at the 'board specs and it seems to indicate that 1600 is an "OC" speed (1066 is tops otherwise). I don't know whether that means the board will limit the multiplier it uses on "auto" settings to 2x533=1066, or whether it'll go to 1600/1800 if it feels brave. Sorry, it's outside my area.

Hopefully one of the "hardware" section regulars will stop by and have a look, or you might want to start a thread over there solely focused on memory speed settings for your hardware.

I did set it to auto for now and will keep my dumps handy and do as you suggested (post in the hardware section). Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

I have not had any BSOD's (knock on wood) since yesterday after changing the memory timings to (auto). I should receive the 2 sticks of RMA ram tomorrow. Along with changing the bios (auto) I did update the audio driver from the makers (VIA) website to the latest driver.

I do notice a slight flicker when the OS is loading. I hope my Win7 Pro upgrades go smoother than my new build did.

Update: I received my new (RMA) RAM yesterday, after installing the new RAM. I could not get the monitor to boot up, I looked at the card and seen two red lights flashing. I reseated the card and it booted up, but then it crashed. I am now in the process of RMA the VGA and ordered a new card. I am hoping that was the problem and should find out this Monday. I am now running the integrated VGA with no problems. I ran memory test on the current ram and all is well.
