Blue Screen and/or Freezing in Home Premium

I've suddenly begun having terrible blue screen and/or freezing problems with Windows 7 Home Premium. I've tried starting in safe mode to check on possible issues, but I've even gotten the BS in there. There is no pattern to it- sometimes it happens instantly, sometimes while on IE or Firefox, sometimes while I'm looking things over in Task Manager. Previously had an issue with excessive CPU usage which I was able to fix (I think)- I thought that was the issue, but the problem is still recurring. Any thoughts?

The display driver seem outdated. Please perform a Windows Update and ensure all updates are installed - check the optional updates too for device specific driver updates.

The workstation froze several more times while I was trying to reboot it to attempt your prescribed fixes. Every time it freezes, I'm forced to shut it down by pressing and holding the start button. However, after the fourth time today trying this, I pressed the start button to turn the workstation back on, and the only thing that happens is that I can hear the fan running incredibly loadly, followed by a double beep sound, and the start button flashing double orange. I was able to shut it back down by pressing and holding the start button for about 10 seconds, but I'm afraid to try it again... Any thoughts?
