Constant BSODs, Mainly during Gaming and Browsing in Firefox

    Hey all,

First of all great forum, been reading here for years, great work.

Since a while my laptop has been acting weird. It randomly freezes a few seconds, then works again, or it totally hangs.

It happens frequently when I play games and also while browsing in Firefox.

It can happen after 5 minutes my laptop is booted and I just opened firefox, or after playing games for 10 hours. It can happen 10 times in a row or once in 3 days.

There is absolutely no logic in it at all, except it never crashed when I did not touch it (I often leave my laptop on while asleep, and it never once crashed during this). I also watch a lot of tv shows and it never crashed during that either.

It's extremely frustrating. I have done almost everything possible. I checked the ram with memtest, I reinstalled Windows, tried every driver possible for every piece of hardware, opened it up and cleaned it etc.

It does not overheat, even when playing games the temperature of my cpu/gpu are fine.

Most of the times the screen either totally freezes or flickers then turns off instead of BSOD, but I get a BSOD sometimes.

Thanks for the help in advance.

    Welcome to Seven Forums.

Reduce the start-up items, Antivirus software is basically whats required.

    ------------------------
    Code:
    Start Menu\Programs\Norton Internet Security
    Start Menu\Programs\Norton Online Backup
Norton is a frequent cause of BSOD's. Please uninstall them with their removal tool. Use Microsoft Security Essentials & the Free version of Malwarebytes, update and make full scans separately:

       Note
Do not start the trial version of MalwareBytes

    Hi,

    Thanks for your reply.

I'm dealing with this issue for 2 months already and have tried harddrive checks (with chkdsk and other software)

I have formatted my laptop multiple times, thus deleting all software (like Norton), it did not many any difference. As I wrote in my previous post, it does not overheat at all, not even close.

It crashed 9 times in the past 12 hours. However, it still never crashed while playing video files with VLC or BS Player. I once played movies on it for a week non stop with 0 crashes, and whenever I started up a game it crashed within 12 hours. It also still hangs frequently when browsing the internet

I am currently watching long youtube videos and it never crashes while I'm watching. I definately have over 100 hours of video without a single crash the past 2 months , but my record on browsing/gaming is about 4 hours.

    Sounds weird.
    Have you tested the RAM?

    ------------------------
Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+:

       Tip

    • Pay close attention to Part 3 of the tutorial "If you have errors"
    • Test the RAM with Memtest86+ for at least 7-10 passes. It may take up to 22 passes to find problems. Make sure to run it once after the system has been on for a few hours and is warm, and then also run it again when the system has been off for a few hours and is cold.

The goal is to test all the RAM sticks and all the motherboard slots.

Check your motherboard manual to ensure the RAM sticks are in the recommended motherboard slots. Some motherboards have very specific slots required for the number of RAM sticks installed.

If you get errors, stop the test and continue with the next step.

    1. Remove all but one stick of RAM from your computer (this will be RAM stick #1), and run Memtest86 again, for 7 passes.
*Be sure to note the RAM stick, use a piece of tape with a number, and note the motherboard slot.
If this stick passes the test then go to step #3.

    2. If RAM stick #1 has errors, repeat the test with RAM stick #2 in the same motherboard slot.
*If RAM stick #2 passes, this indicates that RAM stick #1 may be bad. If you want to be absolutely sure, re-test RAM stick #1 in another known good slot.
*If RAM stick #2 has errors, this indicates another possible bad RAM stick, a possible motherboard slot failure or inadequate settings.
    3. Test the next stick of RAM (stick #2) in the next motherboard slot.
*If this RAM stick has errors repeat step #2 using a known good stick if possible, or another stick.
*If this RAM stick has no errors and both sticks failed in slot#1, test RAM stick #1 in this slot.
    4. If you find a stick that passes the test, test it in all the other motherboard slots.

If Part 2 testing shows errors, and all tests in Part 3 show errors, you will need to test the RAM sticks in another computer and/or test other RAM in your computer to identify the problem.

In this way, you can identify whether it is a bad stick of RAM, a bad motherboard, or incompatibility between the sticks.

After 25 passes no error was found (I ran tests before but only up to 8 passes)

I forgot to add I often got the message "Nvidia driver has stopped responding and has recovered" after my screen flashed black a few times, this was before my format.

After the format and reinstall I still get the same black screen flashes, sometimes it recovers sometimes not, but only got the message once, altough it appears to be the exact same issue.

Is it safe to conclude my gfx card is just broken? I am still confused how I can watch weeks of videos without issues though, and it hasn't froze up once while my laptop was turned on but I was away from it (also for weeks)

Monitor hardware temperature with system monitoring software like Speccy or HWMonitor. Upload a screen shot of the Summary tab as well:

I have monitored my temperatures for weeks and I know for sure it's not an issue with that. It often crashed with my cpu at 50 and gpu at 55 degrees. Is there more to be achieved using these tests? Since it also sometimes crashes after my laptop is on for 1 minute (and with a fresh Windows install) I don't see how cpu/gpu load would be related? Sorry if I'm asking too many questions.

I don't want to run all kind of stress tests for no reason that will potentially overheat things, since it's already messed up I don't want to ruin more parts.

Hello joker, what are we working on here? You keep referencing a laptop but your specs say desktop?
    Before we go further.....
To better help us to help you would you please add your systems specs? Here's the correct way to do it. :SystemInfo See Your System Specs Under System Manufacturer/Model Number add whether it is a desktop or laptop and whether self built. Very important

Log in to Seven Forums and you will be able to transfer the info directly to the specs page in your profile from within the System Info app.

    Your System Specs here.

After doing this your specs will be available in each of your posts.
Click on My system Specs in the lower left of this post to see how it should look.:)
Full instructions are in the tutorial.

Hi Jokerr. There's an ongoing problem impacting hardware acceleration in Firefox on Nvidia adapters, so I hear.

There are two avenues you can try taking to alleviate the problem:
    1. Try installing Nvidia Forceware 314.22, as they are considered most stable by the community (of Nvidia users).
    2. Disable hardware accelaration in Firefox.

However, as you have random problems in games and such too, all indications are that your graphics hardware is on the brink of failure, just not quite there yet (or has been malfunctioning from the start).

Anyway, try installing 314.22 as they will tax the Nvidia adapter the least.

Thanks for both the replies. I have updated my system specs

I have already tried a few different driver versions and none worked. Sometimes it works for days sometimes it crashes within 5 minutes. Is it safe to assume my gpu card is just broken?

I still don't understand how I can watch videos but not play games (altough last week I gamed for 8 hours in a row, the next morning it crashed 5 times within 10 minutes)

It also crashed when outside of Firefox, so I don't think that is the issue. Weird thing, since memtest it's been up for 24 hours now and I haven't had a single flash/black screen yet, altough I have not tried to play games.
