Your CPU is nearly 7 years old. Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 HH80562PH0568M (BX80562Q6600)
This is a bit before Vista was released. Timeline of Microsoft Windows - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia which did support AHCI.

I'm not positive but the SSD should, I say should, work in SATA mode once you set the BIOS correctly.

So I've tried setting the BIOS to P-ATA + S-ATA but it still BSODed.
I didn't do a clean install of windows after changing the setting however...is that necessary?

Now maybe the PSU needs looking at and / or the RAM?

Now if you have a meter try this PSU - Jump Start

test the volts on the leads being careful not to short across the colours and the blacks you will find the volts here

Voltage Rails - Power Supply 101: A Reference Of Specifications

Please be careful and not interfere with the PSU itself.

First though have you tried reseating the RAM sticks? if not try that and if it still is going blue then perhaps memtest

https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.htmlthis one you will need to make a bootable disk set the BIOS to optical (or USBif preferred) boot the machine and let it run for at LEAST 8 passes unless theerrors come up straight away. Takes fair time to complete and some leave itrunning overnight.

Well the curious thing is that my system is stable when running on a hard drive...do you still think it could be PSU or RAM problems?

What is the reason given for the BSOD?
How did you initially put w7 on this SSD?

I can't read dump files which is why I asked what the BSOD error on the screen is. 0x124 is a very generic bug check though.

Yes Gary but I read through some of it and it is showing up a heap of hardware problems in those refs in a few primarily the CPU. .
