BSOD when using the internet after Windows update + other issues

Everything was working just fine, until I responded to a Windows update stating I needed to install important updates on Saturday, Oct. 5th.

    Anyways, here it is

    1. First, I do not have an SF file available, because I cannot get SF Diagnostics to run on my computer. I have tried downloading the most recent version, and there is an error message regarding Visual basic. I have attached that below.

    4. Everything was stable on my system until October 5th, when I received notice that there were Important updates to install. These had apparently installed previously, had failed the first time(?). I follow that with a question mark, as I am not sure this was true. Anyways, installed again, and was marked as successful. Hit "Check Updates" and Windows update indicated they had to be installed again. Tried again, and entered into the endless loop others have described. Restored the computer to the point before installing the updates. Downloaded the appropriate "Fix-it" for Windows MicrosoftFixit50123.msi. Ran that. Then installed again. Thought things were good. Nope.

    3. After this started experiencing BSODs when online. Both in Chrome and in FireFox (64-bit) browsers. I do not use IE, so cannot comment on that.

    4. I have run Malwarebytes Anti-malware, and nothing was found (quick results attached). Quick Scan only. Previous Full Scans showed no infected files - Computer scanned once a week (Full scan).

    5. I have run Microsoft Safety Scanner - 1.0.3001.0 both under Quick and Full scan. No infected files were found.

    6. I have Microsoft Security Essentials - running all the time, and updated regularly. Nothing has been detected or flagged.

    5. Have run sfc/scannow several times: no problem files are found.

    6. Have run chkdsk/r/f several times. Indicates that 76 records needed to be reparsed. Usually run after a BSOD has occurred.

    7. After messing with this for a while - rebooted enter recovery and tried to restore to an earlier point (before I installed the updates). Received an error (did not write it down) in that it could not recover the restore point successfully. Restarted, and was at the restore point anyways before I had installed the the updates on October 5th. Right now I have 28 Important Updates and 3 optional updates waiting to be installed.

    8. Have run CheckSUR - Update Windows6.1-KB947821-v28-x64.msu several times. And consistently get the same messages. Logs are attached below. However, will note that the files flagged have been present (and incorrectly named) since May 2013, and had not previously caused problems.

    9. Additional issues: Having problems recognizing that I am connected to the internet (icon has a red cross through it although it is connected and working fine).

    10. Certain extensions on Chrome are no longer working. Just noticed this, not sure if it is associated with the problem that I am having. However, the AdBlock plus and the WOT extensions are no longer functional. This only occurred after I started having issues.

    11. Have had issues with Windows Update causing instability on my computer before. Received help here on a previous thread.

    12. Have had instability problems with the nvidia driver and the OS since initially receiving the computer in 2009.

    13. Things had been stable for a while. However, the failed (?) rollback mentioned above did not resolve the BSOD's - they are still occurring.

An update to Number 1. Where I could not get SF Diagnostics tool to work. Got it to work.
Attached is the SF file that I was able to find. Not sure the mini dump files are as they should be.

Hello and welcome to SF :) .
All of the bugchecks are a TDR (Timeout Detection Recovery) is not a bugcheck in the true sense in that something
has went terribly wrong in the kernel which forced the machine to crash.

Timeout Detection & Recovery (TDR) = "Display Driver Stopped Responding and was Recovered" is a useful feature that started in Vista and is also in W7 that allows the OS to try and recover from a video timeout so that the system does not crash to a bluescreen. Symptoms included a screen flash with the TDR message appearing one or more times or the screen blinking out to black. If the system cannot recover it will crash (Stop Error 116 typical). The issue is that the video card is not responding as expected. The solution is in the: why?

There is no one-size-fits-all solution to TDR errors. But the problem is usually found in the local environment (your computer). Finding the cause is a matter of checking every possible cause and uncovering the culprit through a simple process of elimination. By methodically running down a checklist of diagnostic procedures you should be able to find the cause and can correct it.

There are numerous reports of hardware solutions to TDR's. The most common are:

    • Poor Cooling
    • Problems with the power supply
    • Overclocking Issues
    • Bad System memory or incorrect memory timings
    • Defective PC Components

    Bugcheck:

    Code:
    BugCheck 116, {fffffa8009fbf4e0, fffff880064ed700, ffffffffc000009a, 4}

        Image name: nvlddmkm.sys
        Timestamp: Fri Jun 21 12:06:16 2013
    You're using version 320.49,
    Code:
    Driver Version 9.18.13.2049
Roll back to a more stable version.

    Oh what Joy!
Another machine that has been screwed by the joys of Norton software?

Download theNorton Removal Tool from here https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?lg=english&ct=united+states&docid=20080710133834EN&product=home&version=1&pvid=f-home

Close all otherprograms, then run the tool. When it's complete, reboot the machine whether it asks for it or not.

Afterthe reboot, open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

    NETSH WINSOCK RESET

You'llbe advised to reboot - do so.

    thenpost an MGADiag report.

Ignore errors produced when clicking on theCopy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup filesfor some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to yourresponse.

    Hey Noel and YoYo155,

Norton was disabled and removed except for the last little bit. I don't think that was the issue. Regardless, things got much worse. I manged to backup and save all my data.

Since the Norton was on the clean factory install, I'll follow Noel's advice (although I thought I had done that previously).

I do appreciate your assistance. And apologies for not getting back to you sooner - obviously I was encountering severe difficulties.

I honestly cannot say what went wrong at this point. But I do want to point out a couple of interesting things.

    1. The problem started with issues with Windows Update.
    2. In the end, system became incredibly unstable and Windows Update became corrupted to the point that it was unfixible using the MSfixits, repair, or recovery disks I had.
    3. This was similar to the problem I encountered previously (my first post to this forum).
    4. Not sure what all was involved - but I did wave the white flag of surrender and just wiped it clean. In the process of rebuilding.

I do appreciate your replies. Cannot say for certain what happened, or why. You all have a good one.

I'll probably be back again. Although, I will take tips for replacing my GPU - as this has been an issue from the moment I got the computer, and by now may be so flaky as to warrant replacing.

Thanks again. If you can give me tips on a GPU more stable or reeliable - but not terribly pricey - open for suggestions.

Update: Reinstalled from the factory disks. In the process of updating everything. Everything is stable at the moment, no more BSOD's. Although the problem was never directly addressed, this has solved the issue (for the time being). Thus, I will mark this as solved. Thanks again for trying to assist.
