    Random Freezing Began Suddenly

I can't explain this one - suddenly out of nowhere I'm getting random freezing and I see my HD light frozen, requiring a hard reboot. The browser will freeze, a Word document freezes. Once that starts, the end begins and a total freeze occurs.

I did a chkdsk on all disks and it comes out fine. using SMART tests on all drives comes out OK. Using short tests on all drives comes out OK. The only one that made a difference was Crystal Disk Info and this is just a big guess. The "ratings" were a 95% for my C drive (an SSD that has been great.) One hard disk I use for data got a "Caution" and it's numbers seem worse than the good one:

    Current / Worst / Threshold
    Reallocated Sectors Count -- 95 95 5
    Current Pending Sector Count 87 87 0

    The good one was:
    200 / 200 / 180
    200 / 200 / 0

The only guess I can make is that perhaps this disk might be failing. But all the other programs seem to think it's fine and I'm still not sure why I'd get general freezes even when I'm not necessarily using that disk. Wondering the best way to troubleshoot this issue.

Hmm mate that is a lot of RAM!! Now the sector count I am wondering if you should test out the boot hard drive mate. I see you have quite a few there and I don't know which one it is if it is say one of the SSD's then I would be inclined to disconnect the others and test it with the sites test software form Crucial.

Yah, the RAM was a bargain for ultra high quality and speed. I tested out the boot drive (crucial) and they don't have dedicated software. They may have a BIOS update although I hate to use those when everything worked so well for so long. I wonder whether it is a Windows update.

Hmm that is a a bit of a nuisance they have firmware updates SSD Support but it is worth going back and do a system restore if you think it is a Windows update.
So if you can remember about what time and date the problem began set the restore to then and I would also set the updates to let me know they are available and let me choose what to download and install. To block any updates you don't want all you have to do is right click on it and hide it .

System restores terrify me, tbh. :) It will require me to roll back a week. Look at the restores, it seems that the problems began right after a "critical Windows Update" - I wonder if it even makes sense to roll back. I can try to update the firmware but I don't think that is the issue. Might be a conflict somewhere with the update. Hopefully this will work itself out.

This machine has been incredible. The AS Rock mobo has been perhaps the best performer I've ever had for the most part. Typically everything works and well. Makes me forget the Abit Board I had, one of the last before they went out. We shall see... thanks.

Well I would not be worried too much about the restore klinky I would be if I had to do a memtest which is another thing you can do but with that much RAM it is going to take a VERY long time mate. Just out of curiosity why have you got so much installed when 8GB is usually sufficient and 16GB well overkill in my tiny mind.

It might be worth try reducing the RAM GB say by half??

I applied several optional updates. Now everything is rock solid again. Thank you Microsoft, lol.

I love the RAM - I create a 10GB RAM disk and it's the best cache ever. Having 20GB remaining to work with for windows is excellent when you use photoshop and also video apps. 8GB is bare minimum these days IMHO, especially if you have a bunch of browser windows open.

Thanks for the assistance though - much appreciated. Glad it's a happy ending. I bought cheap 256GB SSD drive which I will mirror my current on just to make sure I have a backup if and when needed.

Sorry late reply klinky and glad things have sorted out ok understand why the amount of RAM I am not much good with graphic stuff keep to to my 8GB.

The SSD mate will make a lot of difference to boot up and just make sure the TRIM is active the defrag is turned off and never do a chkdsk on it the TRIM you can check by this Make Sure TRIM Is Enabled for Your Solid State Drive in Windows 7 for Better Performance I always do although I know Windows is pretty good but for peace of mind :)
