I ran the Long Test in SeaTools for over six hours with no conclusion. I didn't know how long I should let it run, so I stopped it and shut it down.

Should I try again and let it run longer? If so, how long should I give it?

    Thanks again!

That is unreasonable, I believe it might have froze.
Please try it again and this time keep tabs on the progress percentage and LBA numbers (they should change) and judge whether it is still active.

Just to be on the safe side I would also run a test of the memory.
    Testing the RAM:

Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+:

       Tip

    • Pay close attention to part 3 of the tutorial "If you have errors"
    • Test the RAM with Memtest86+ for at least 7-10 passes. It may take up to 22 passes to find problems. Make sure to run it once after the system has been on for a few hours and is warm, and then also run it again when the system has been off for a few hours and is cold.

When done with the testing procedure take a picture and upload it here.

I tried running the Long Test again and am not seeing any numbers moving anywhere - no percentages, nothing that appears to be a LBA. I expect it never did run before, just said it started the long test and indicates "testing" but no movement of numbers anywhere.

So, is it best to just skip the Long Test and move on and do the Test the RAM with Memtest86+?

    Thanks.

Let's try the short test then, let me know how it goes and its result if any.

I tried the Short Test in SeaTools and have the same situation as with the Long Test - it says it is testing and gives the date and time the test started, but no numbers moving anywhere - no percentages of completion or anything.

    What now?

Thanks for hanging in there with me.

No, it does not sound good. Here is the info about his laptop:

    Dell Inspiron 5520
    Intel Core i3-2370M CPU @ 2.40 GHz
    Installed Memory (RAM) 600 GB
    64-bit OS

Might it need a new hard drive? My husband tells me that the laptop took a little spill from a dog incident but worked perfectly well for days after that. Otherwise, nothing unusual to report.

    Thanks.

Thanks for the added info :).
I was looking for the HDD manufacturer in particular.
That only makes things a lot more complicated, as corrosion can damage an electric component
sometimes months after, are you sure you want to continue "sinking" more money into the PC
with a chance of it dying completely?

I spoke to my husband about it and he would like to try replacing the hard drive even with the chance of it dying completely. He just needs to determine where to get a reasonable price that likely would need to be shipped to us since we don't live near many stores.

Sorry but I don't have any further information about the drive in terms of manufacturer. How would I find out if it's not included in our specs?

    Thanks.

Just to reiterate we haven't definitely established that the HDD is the issue it may well be other parts
    concerning the storage sub-system.

Most BIOS these days list the serial number which contains reveals the manufacturer, please post that
series of letters and numbers. It can be found usually under the SATA Mode and / or by looking at the Boot Order.

You can put any hard drive in. The brand does not matter. Western Digital and Seagate are good brands. There are others also. You can look here Newegg.com - 500 gb internal hard drive and they will mail to you. You should be able to find a 500 GB in the $70 range.
