    Random Black Screen

I installed Windows 7 Home Professional today. It has crashed twice. Both times it was while I was using Adobe After Effects (maybe coincidence?). The screen goes all black while I am using my computer, and absolutely nothing will wake it back up. My power light is still on, and my battery is not dead. The only way to get back on is to power it off and restart it. I've lost quite a bit of work so any help is appreciated.

    Mucho Thanks!

Is there anything significant being logged at the time in either the system or the application event log (run EVENTVWR)?

Are there any DMP files in \Windows\Minidump? If so, can you please move them to another location on your system, zip them up, and upload here.

If the answer to both questions above is "no", then there's not a lot to go on. As a suggestion, make sure your BIOS and video, NIC, chipset... drivers are all up-to-date. If the problem is caused by software issues, it'll be either the BIOS or a buggy driver. Updates may fix the issue.

uploaded my minidump, there are quite a few DMP files (not sure what that means).
I updated all of my drivers, but that hasn't changed anything, i'm getting these crashes 2/3 times per day. Also, I noticed that when I put my computer in hibernation mode it's impossible to wake it up. The screen is black and my power light is still on (just like when these crashes occur) and I have to manually reboot. I'm not exactly sure how to answer your first question, what exactly am I looking for in EVENTVWR?

    thanks for the help.

sorry for the double post but I checked my Event Viewer Windows Log and I noticed that I have been getting a lot of errors with ahv.exe (adobe help viewer) could this be part of the problem?

Don't worry about the Event Viewer. Unfortunately, the plethora of DMP files (one per crash) all point at what's called a "machine check exception" hardware error report. More info:

Only if the hardware error report stems from some form of hardware confusion caused by a driver which operates under Win7 but not under Vista.

I'd suggest following that checklist instead of returning to Vista right now. After all, the point is to end up running Win7, and it's entirely possible that something as simple as updating the BIOS and the hardware-related drivers will help.
