I'd suggest starting your own thread here and following the info-gathering procedure I just suggested to DannyAves. This is a very generic error message and there's absolutely nothing right now to link the cause(s) in your instance to anybody else's, or indeed to link the various periodically "not responding" apps on your machine.

I almost feel like posting to that technet discussion to say "stop confusing each other and feeding off each other's premature diagnoses!" The Internet has a lot to answer for :)

H2SO4, it is not only applications. it can be the control panel, explorer, anything and everything that is 'not responding'

I doubt I can get a dump file because even when the task manager is run on top, whenever I get 'not responding', the task manager is also (you guessed it)...not responding. Whenever the task manager is responding, the not responding has gone.

I will try and get a screen shot, if possible, to show you what I mean.

I did a new install with different media yesterday, it ran perfectly for about 6 hours and then the 'not responding' started. It is so bad now that I am posting this from my XP drive because the Win 7 is (you guessed it)...not responding.

I have a new CPU, RAM and M/board coming tomorrow and I will try that and see.

You're looking for an add-on component which injects code into each of those processes, or the Win32 subsystem itself (which is responsible for "painting" the UI and handling message passing).

Do you use any type of desktop "enhancer" or "extender"? Ultramon, or anything like that?

Do the same symptoms manifest themselves in safe mode? (Press F8 at startup to get there.)

I'd also suggest you test what happens with AVG completely uninstalled, at least temporarily. It's absolutely nothing personal against AVG, but it's the type of component which has the architectural wherewithall required to cause this type of "global" issue affecting multiple processes.

Disabling it is not a valid test, but if you completely uninstall AVG, reboot, and the issue doesn't occur, it's obviously somehow part of the problem.

I'm quite confident that the "me too" crowd on that technet thread do not share a common root cause for their symptom, at least for the most part. Heck, they don't even share the same symptom in many of the cases, despite the fact that they're all misguidedly looking at the bottom of the coffee cup for The One True Solution for their many and varied issues - which of course doesn't exist.

I uninstalled AVG as you suggested and it has run the longest it has ever run without a crash. I will watch it for a few more days before claiming victory.

Two days, no crashes, therefore AVG was the culprit. Thanks H2SO4.

I have had numerous non-responding issues, among them Windows Explorer, OmniPage and WordPerfect X4 and X5, all running under Win 7. The non-responding issue usually comes when I try to change the name of a file or folder or so save a file with a new extension. Here is a link to a dump when WordPrefect X5 hung when I tried to change the default folder for saving files. Hope someone can help. I feel the problem lies with Windows 7
