Zplayer did this machine come with Windows 8? as i found a site that tells me that the 8 drivers for the graphics have to be completely removed first in the first Google link I picked up and then the article says this in the pic and this is the download link for the 7 drivers for the switchbable graphics - according to this Driver updates for Switchable Graphics Enabled Notebooks - HP Support Forum - 1389819

Well Z we are running out of options here I think maybe if you can get a bootable memtest made up then we had better at least try it but just remember this one takes along time.

Now it could be just so many things the RAM the drive the monitor the CPU and those ruddy switchable graphics chips.

Now just as a matter of interest I reckon we should at least try out the temps on the equipment so if you can run HW Info or Speccy and then post back what the temps are it may throw some light on it as it is four years old? and the thermal compounds could be bad (dried out)
HWiNFO, HWiNFO32/64 - Download >make sure of the bit version or Speccy - System Information - Free Download > download form piriform.

I have included a couple of pics of what mine is and in HE Info you will have to hit Sensor and then scroll down to those temps.
Mate I am so sorry you are having this rotten trot but hang in there

Hey here are the pics of HWiNFO and Speccy. Would using this for the memtest be ok?

Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

Also I noticed that in the HWiNFO says that the GPU clock of the ATI card is 13.6MHz and that the Graphic memory size is -1024 KB, is that because I'm using the Integrated Graphic card ?

Edit: I was able to log into normal mode (black screen) and blindly disable the ATI card display driver using the device manager, as soon as I disabled it the monitor came back to life so I used HWiNFO and it displayed the correct GPU clock and memory for the ATI card.

Ok Z mate the CPU (and the motherboard) are a tad on the warm side for my liking the GPU stuff I know someone (good friend) who knows about this stuff I 'll ask him to have a look at it as it sounds like the other graphic thing is the problem.

Leave the memtest for a bit until he has had a look at the graphics and he might ask for other details.

If you have to do a memtest -

MEMTEST

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.htmlthis one you will need to make a bootable disk set the BIOS to optical (or USB if preferred) boot the machine and let it run for at LEAST 8 passesunless the errors come up straight away. Takes a fair time to complete and some leave it running overnight.

If you do get errors and have more than one stick then you will need to test each one separately and maybe even in the separate slots.

My hunch is either the card or the driver is up the creek without a paddle.

I also think your ATI video is bad since you get a display using the Intel on-board graphics. One way to test is to connect an external monitor if you can and try the ATI graphics. If that works, your laptop screen is bad.

As a note, with any laptop, always use driver only from the manufacturer's site. Many use specially modded ones for their equipment.

Yes mate I was thinking the screen in post#7 but then saw the graphics stuff and thought maybe it was not after all.

Tried connecting to an external monitor but again it only showed the black screen, I guess it really is the graphic card.

Yes it would seem so.

About the only way to fix that would be a replacement motherboard since the GPU is hard-soldered in as John said.
