Sorry late reply Kev mate I can't remember anywhere us seeing if safe mode can be run?? If it can then maybe get Speccy on a stick using another machine put the stick in the faulty machine install and see if we can get the info that route.
I wish I had the machine in front of me I would really like to have a dig around in the installation drive with Ubuntu and even Speccy but........

I just cannot think of any other way of finding that code / key and if not it will mean an OEM.

Second picture in the original post. It will not boot past CLASSPNP. I'm probably just going to buy a key.

Probably best option Kev flipping nuisance but there seems to be no alternative.
You can still use the tutorial for an ISO if you don't want to get a disk shipped I suppose but I guess the key will come with a download, but if it goes awry then yes the tutorial ISO's the best bet.

I tried ProduKey, Speccy, and a bunch of others. I copied the Windows file, moved it to different locations with no success. I tried to retrieve the key directly off of the hdd with no success. I said screw it and went to Fry's. I picked up a $20 dvd drive (that I will (probably) never use again) and W7HP. Can you believe that Microsoft stop distributing W7 to retail stores? I'm surprised Fry's even had it.

I greatly appreciate the help. I learned a lot about how my computer operates from this. I'll keep you updated on the fresh install.

I did got an extra terrabyte (now 2Tb), a SSD, as well as a cd/dvd drive, an extra 16gb flash drive (now two), and a 100% authentic copy of W7. I'm happy. I was really gunning for a Corsair H60 liquid cooler but whatevs.

"SWAG" definitely isn't staying there, but I figured I'd show that everything is almost normal again.

Thanks guys.

Yes mate I am buying up Windows 7 whenever I can as it will disappear sooner rather than later, and I always like to keep a couple of copies spare for builds.

The opto mate is always useful for booting in case the USB ports go bad and I prefer booting stuff like rescue disks and Ubuntu form it as I find the stick method too fiddly. Plus it is good for burning music CD's for the car etc

You can use 8 with the 7 look start up but there are some differences that are annoying like opening PDF files that are sent to you and it goes to the apps to open them meaning you are constantly returning to the 7 look with the Win and X keys, and msconfig is slightly different out of the two 8 is quicker I find but 7 easier to use.
