F12 seems to do same thing as F2. The best result I can get is having pressed it F2/12 I was able to get to the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool. I am getting it to ruin 10 passes is this vaguely right? Of the options it offered I went for the most detailed.

F2/12 does exactly the same thing I have been able to start and run the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool (10 passes) I selected the most thorough. Is this roughly right?

You may want to consult your manual and see which key does what. My Dell laptop, those are the keys, but it is pretty old. On the Dell Logo, at the bottom it usually tells you which key gets you into start up. You may need to enter BIOS and select the USB drive as the first boot device and the hard drive as second boot device.

cgd, I'm beginning to think you have a motherboard problem. It It won't let you into BIOS very easily, for some reason and it won't boot into what you set as boot devices. Please open the USB drive and compare the files and sizes to this. This is what should be on the USB drive
