BSOD when “browse/open file” window is launched - error 0x0000001E

    Hi everyone,

My Gateway FX6860 desktop PC is experiencing BSOD every time a “browse/open file” window is launched. For example: when I want to upload a file, or when I am opening any MS office file (word/excel/etc) using “File > Open”, or when I want to attach a file to an email/ forum post, etc. This issue is reproducible.

In fact, I have to use my laptop to be able to attach the SF_Diagnostic zip file and screenshot to this post.

I did run a sfc/scannow and it did not find anything.

    Please help.

    Thanks in advance!!
    -Dave

    Welcome to the forum marveldave,

Make sure your dump logging is enabled.
    1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click System.
    3. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
    4. Check Write an even to the system log, and Automatically restart.
    5. In the Write debugging information list, click Small memory dump (256k).

    Location of Dumps:
    C:\Windows\minidump

I enabled the dump logging per your instruction.

Please find the dmp file attached.

BTW, I don't know if this helps, but in safe mode, I did not get the BSOD when the "open/browse file" window is launched.

    Thanks!

    Thanks.

Norton contributes to BSOD's often. Please remove it for testing purpose.

Microsoft Security Essentials is recommended from a strict BSOD perspective, compatibility & stability
compared to other antivirus or internet security software. It is free and lightweight:-

       Warning
Do not start the free trial of Malware Bytes; remember to deselect that option when prompted.

Run the System File Checker that scans the of all protected Windows 7 system files and replaces incorrect corrupted, changed/modified, or damaged versions with the correct versions if possible:
    • Click on the
    • Type CMD on Search
    • Left click and Run as Administrator
    • Type SFC /scannow

    Full tutorial here:

    Make scans with the following:

    Kaspersky TDSSKiller

    ESET online scanner:

Check for updates on the drivers below:

Sometimes drivers remain, not completely uninstalled. Follow this tutorial for complete removal of drivers of the particular program: How to Clean Left Over Driver Files with Driver Sweeper

Use Revo Uninstaller to uninstall stubborn software. Opt for Advance Mode while uninstalling which allows you to remove leftover registry:-

Run Disk Check on your Hard Drive for file system errors and bad sectors on it:

Upload a screenshot of your hard disk using Crystal Disk Info:

I uninstalled Norton per your suggestion, but that did not fix the issue.

However, I did manage to find out the culprit of the BSOD by using "elimination technique" of disabling the services through System Configuration window and then restarting the computer. What I noticed was if I disable the Workstation service, I did not get the BSOD when the "browse/open file" window is launched!

From what I understood, the workstation service is necessary if I want to share files with other computer within a network. However I don't think I need to do that because I only have one computer, so I guess I can live without having the workstation service running in the background.

Does anyone have any idea why the workstation service can cause a BSOD?

    Thanks.

Correction. The culprit is actually the Computer Browser service. Apparently disabling the workstation service will also disable Computer Browser service, that's why I first thought it was the workstation service that was causing the BSOD.

When I googled the computer browser service, I found this...

    "What Is Computer Browser Service?
Computer Browser service is the mechanism that collects and distributes the list of workgroups and domains and the servers within them. The list displays in the Microsoft Windows Network window and related windows in My Network Places."

So again, looks like a service that I may not need to run since I only have one computer connected to the network.

However, I would still would like to know why this service caused the BSOD, so if you guys have any idea, kindly let me know, because I'd still want to be able to fix this issue completely.

    Thanks again!
