Just an FYI here, the latest drivers are not always the best.

Additionally, on laptop gpu drivers the first place to check for drivers should be the laptop support page.

    Notebooks & Ultrabooks - N55SL - ASUS

Their latest driver for your notebook is from 2012, while not a recent driver it may be the best for your laptop.

OEM's usually offer a modified driver specifically for their products.

This is also pointed out on Nvidias download notes,

As part of the NVIDIA Notebook Driver Program, this is a reference driver that can be installed on supported NVIDIA notebook GPUs. However, please note that your notebook original equipment manufacturer (OEM) provides certified drivers for your specific notebook on their website. NVIDIA recommends that you check with your notebook OEM about recommended software updates for your notebook. OEMs may not provide technical support for issues that arise from the use of this driver.
While it does show your GPU in the list of supported products, you seem to still have problems.

You can try a few different things,

1.) Test the driver from ASUS.

2.) Try some earlier versions from Nvidia.

3.) Uninstall your current driver using this method below,

    1. Go to Device Manager and expand Display Adapters.

    2. Right click on your adapter and choose properties.

    3. Select the Driver tab and choose uninstall.

    4. When finished, reboot the computer and let Windows install the available WHQL driver.

@Harrie: Yeah, I've done this in the past too and it doesn't seem to have solved the problem.
@Derek: Ok I'm going to try everything you said later tonight, I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks again for your help guys, I appreciate it.

    Hi guys,

Step 2 seems to have worked, I've chosen a driver from quite a few months back and I don't seem to have crashed yet. If I'm crash free for a few days I'll mark this as solved. Thanks again!

OK so a few days later and it has returned. Any insight? Maybe I should try a yet older driver..

I realize this driver is old but it is directly from ASUS and may be worth a try because most OEM's modify drivers specifically for their products.

    Notebooks & Ultrabooks - N55SL - ASUS

See how that works. This should help you with cleaning up previous drivers.

Do a clean install of the display driver.

    • Uninstall All nvidia items in Control Panel > Programs and features
      • 3D Vision Control Driver
      • 3D Vision Driver
      • Graphics Driver
      • HD Audio Driver
      • PhysX
      • nvidia Update

(Are you using nvidia chipset drivers? If so, dont uninstall anything other than those are listed).
    • Now follow Drivers - Clean Left over Files after Uninstalling
    • Install the driver again. While installing, Select Custom (Advanced) install. In the next page, follow this settings:

    Hi,

Thanks I tried that, exactly as you said. The issue if anything has gotten worse, though of course its very eratic. I'd used DDDU for another driver too, though that didn't work either.

Could it be hardware related? I'm really despairing at this.
