BSOD when playing installed games on Windows 7 64-Bit
For the past week or so I've had my machine reboot whilst playing games installed onto my hard drive. From what I can gather it seems that it may have something to do with my Radeon HD 5900 graphics card driver.
The Blue Screen View software reports the following .sys file being the main problem...
atikmdag.sys (an AMD file)
Initially I tried to reinstall the drivers and software from AMD's website (I tried both 64bit versions - v14.4 and the new BETA v14.7) but I still got the same issue. I followed the instructions on AMD's website by uninstalling all of AMD software and drivers.
Then out of despiration I even tried following another users solution (from a diffrent forum) to the problem by copying the atikmdag.sy_ from my AMD folder on C: drive and copying it to my desktop then going to the command line and expanding the file thus changing it from atikmdag.sy_ to atikmdag.sys. Then I went to the System32 folder, renamed the atikmdag.sys to atikmdag.sys.old then copied the new atikmdag.sys from my desktop that I had just created and pasted it into the System32 folder then restarted my machine. I must have had a few atikmdag.sy_ files left over from previous installtions as I had chosen the wrong one with rether disasterous results (Windows crashed a few minutes after loading up)
I managed to undo the damage by booting up in safe mode, removing the offending file I'd added and reverted the original file extension back from sys.old to .sys again.
Although my system is somewhat more stable now I can't play any games for more than a few minutes.
As per instructions regarding BSOD issues, I have uploaded a zip file with the required info (dump files etc) which will hopefully help someone decifer what the underlying issue is (other than a foolish and desperate user - me )
I hope someone can help me with this, it's driving me nuts
