Windows 7: BSOD by atikmpag.sys

BSOD by atikmpag.sys

Hi,
I have been experiencing systematic BSODs when playing videos using either XBMC 13.2, PowerDVD 13 or WMP.
I have and AMD APU A10 6700T on an ASUS F2A85-V-Pro mobo.

This had all been running perfectly stable for months until, I believe, I updated the BIOS of the mobo. Unfortunately I did not register from which BIOS version I upgraded. I do know it was a version that was from before the support for the newer A10 APUs was supported (whence my decision to upgrade). Now it's v6407.

I have uninstalled Catalyst and re-installed it but to no avail.

The symptoms are as follows:
I play a video (can be DVD, BluRay, mkv file, avi... whatever). After a while, can be within minutes or after an hour, the player will crash. If I launch the movie again I get the BSOD. Sometimes, the BSOD occurs immediately after the player crashes or when the movie is interrupted by me stopping or pausing it, or by a windows program bringing up some pop-up message.

WhoCrashed gives the following dump log every time:
On Wed 17/09/2014 20:13:26 GMT your computer crashed
crash dump file: C:\Windows\Minidump\091714-6988-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: atikmpag.sys (atikmpag+0xBDAC)
Bugcheck code: 0x116 (0xFFFFFA8006FCD4E0, 0xFFFFF88003A0BDAC, 0x0, 0xC)
Error: VIDEO_TDR_ERROR
file path: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\atikmpag.sys
product: AMD driver
company: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
description: AMD multi-vendor Miniport Driver
Bug check description: This indicates that an attempt to reset the display driver and recover from a timeout failed.
A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error. It is suggested you look for an update for the following driver: atikmpag.sys (AMD multi-vendor Miniport Driver, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.).
Google query: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. VIDEO_TDR_ERROR

I would try downgrading the BIOS, but I find it risky to do so and I do not know, unfortunately which version I had before that ran stable.
I provide the log collector results here.

thanks a lot for any help!!

Hi, sorry for not replying before but it has taken a while to prove my solution.

My solution to this was the following:
I came across the fact that the standard Catalyst drivers that AMD installs or automatically updates are actually not the right ones. There is a Catalyst version specifically for the APUs only that you can get if you go to the AMD drivers download page:
Download Drivers

Since installing this, my BSODs have disappeared.

So, be careful! When the auto update tool tells you to update your catalyst software, don't!
Get it from the drivers page above and enter the APU that you have.

cheers,
PietPara

Hi, unfortunately I have to say that I get the BSODs again.
Same reason... atikmdag.sys causes TDR error during video playback.

Strange thing is. After my last post, in which I say it was solved, I had no more constant BSODs. I went on holiday for some weeks, came back, turn on my PC to watch a movie and ... BSODs all the time.

I can't understand this at all. I see this error mentioned all over the place, but nowhere there's a true solution.

Any ideas anyone?

thanks

Hi,
I followed the driver cleaning instructions and installed the latest catalyst drivers 14.9 from 29.09.2014 for my desktop APU A-series. However, I still have the BSOD with any video file I try to run.

I'm at wits end with this.

Here I attach the log collector file again and include the MGADiag info:

I have found out that the BSODs do not occur when I use VLC player.

Also, in Event viewer I see that AODdriver4.3 service will not start because it cannot find the specified file.

What does that mean? Can it be related?

I hope someone can help me further with this since this error makes my HTPC almost useless as HTPC.
:-(

thanks in advance!
