    BSOD at random situations caused by atikmdag.sys A01

    Hi Guys,

    Getting random bluescreens (A01) always related to the above file.

    I have recently bought a new ati card (R9 290, Gigabyte) which may/may not be related to this issue.

    I have performed a reinstall of windows, which helped this issue for about 24 hours and then it started again.

    As per the bsod post rule I have ran the file which generates the zip with all the info and you can find that attached. :)

    EDIT: Sorry guys, just noticed I put this in the wrong section...If someone can move it to blue screen help that would be great.

    Regards, Nick

    This issue is related to AMD graphics only.
    Code:
    BugCheck A0000001, {5, 0, 0, 0}

    Probably caused by : atikmdag.sys ( atikmdag+28ece )

    Stop 0xA0000001 is a custom bugcheck inherent in AMD/ATI display environment. Let us try another version of the display driver. As you are using CCC 14.4 WHQL, and R9 cards does not support a driver below 13.12 WHQL, let us try that one.

    Let us know how it is running.

    Hi Arc.

    Did as you said above.

    Tested last night, played 3 games with no issues for total of about 2.5 hours.

    Tonight I played Crysis for about 15 minutes and got the same blue screen.

    New log attached.

    Yes, 13.12 WHQL is also throwing the same bugcheck.
    Code:
    BugCheck A0000001, {5, 0, 0, 0}

    Probably caused by : atikmdag.sys ( atikmdag+277ce )

    I said it earlier too, that it is a BSOD inherent in AMD display environment. If it occurs with a particular game only, then you may decide that the particular game is not optimized for AMD. In that case you want to consult with AMD for solutions, and to the game developer, if they have custom settings or patches to make that game workable in your system.

    BUT, if the issue continues to occur everywhere, you will need to replace the GPU.

    Hi Arc and others.

    I appear to have resolved the issue.

    No blue screens since my last post.

    Things I did:

    1. Reapplied thermal paste on my CPU (it was getting to 95 degrees in games), which is a bit high.
    2. Updated the stock bios on my video card which is known to cause issues, it was on stock which is 039, its now running 041.
    3. Set my i7 930 (LGA1366) cpu vcore to static 1.225, these cpu's I've found through a lot of digging are prone to overvolting under high load (some games), and causing other devices to throw blue screens.
    4. Set further fan profiles to ensure card stays at or below a max temp of 80 degrees during high load gameplay. (Using MSI Afterburner)

    I hope this info can be of use to people that run into this issue down the track.

    Thanks again Arc for your valuable help with the issue I faced.

    Regards,

    Moltenz
