I did run memtest 86+ for 16 passes 6 days ago (it was overnight plus left it running while I was at work). I also had run it for 8 passes twice before that (so 3 times in past 3 weeks or so). I can run it overnight tonight if you think I should.

EDIT: would there be value in running the sticks separately just to be sure?

Just an update: I ran memtest 86+ overnight (8 full passes) with no errors again. Before that I enabled Driver Verifier and ran Heaven benchmark for about an hour on a loop to see if it would crash the system or show any artifacts--neither happened. GPU temp stayed around 70-71 throughout that process. As of now I'll keep the system on 24/7 as before and see if Verifier can get it to crash again.

One more question--I'm running Event Viewer a couple of times per day--i often get VSS Volume Shadow Copy Service errors. Is this something to be concerned about?

Click start, type services.msc, scroll gown to Volume shadow copy service, right click it and see if it is set to Manual. That is what the setting should be.

Right click computer, select Manage, in the left column select disk management, look at the 100MB System Reserved partition and see how much free space is there.

Well, it was set to automatic because I changed it a couple of days ago from manual because I read somewhere it should be automatic (I was seeing the VSS errors prior to changing to automatic); anyway, I changed it back to manual.

The 100 MB reserved partition shows 72MB free and 28 MB used.

UPDATE: still seeing VSS errors after changing to manual and rebooting.

Another recurrence of the system being frozen--power light on, fans spinning, mouse light on, but not responding to anything and monitor not waking up out of sleep--had to hard re-boot it. I'm about to chuck the whole system.
