OK. I'll see if I can get another opinion.
Thanks Golden,
I really do appreciate the time you've spent trying to help me here. I should have a new SSD on Friday and will start another clean install of the OS on it this weekend. I plan to only install the programs/drivers I use on a regular basis in hopes that it is the SSD I currently have causing my issues.
In lieu of that, I've already replaced my power supply, and graphics card. I may opt to upgrade the processor next.
One thing I haven't mentioned is that I had a house fire a couple of months ago. My computer was not running but there was quite a bit of soot on it externally. I took it apart and used Electro-Contact cleaner to clean everything (it's a chemical specifically designed to clean electronics). I was having BSODs prior to this so I didn't think it an issue but as these problems keep increasing I'm suspect of the hardware now.
p40whk, May I suggest that when you do the clean install, to install Windows, your Chipset driver, Graphics driver using this tutorial, on a clean install start with step 9 NVIDIA Drivers - Avoid Problems , your Lan/WiFi drivers,
Microsoft Security Essentials (Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows) and nothing else. Run all the important and recommended updates except the graphics driver and use it that way for long enough to see if you have a BSOD. Nothing there will cause a BSOD. It will help us determine if you have a software or hardware problem. If you have a BSOD please upload the DM log again. If you do not have a BSOD after a thorough testing, install 1 program at a time and test afterwards, then another program. This will take much longer, but it will enable you to determine what your problem is. If you start having the BSOD problem again, you will know which program it is, and maybe can help with that.
I realize this is a much longer and harder way to do an install, but it is the best way to determine what the problem is. We can hope the problem is only the hard drive, but better safe than sorry. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
Great. Hopefully it is just the hard drive throwing errors, but this way we should know for sure.
Since I will have to do a clean install of the OS as well as install a new SSD I figured it was time to go ahead and upgrade my Mobo and processor since Microcenter had a great deal on a bundle.
I have a question regarding the drivers to install. Since many of the BSODs I've been getting are tied into drivers I am wondering what's actually needed and what is just fluff.
Should I install from the CD that comes with the Mobo or download them from the Mobo manufacturer's website?
I'm installing an ASRock Z97 Extreme6 and they list the following drivers and utilities on their website for download. Some of these look like duplicates such as the LAN and USB drivers (different mfr.)
Do you install all of these? Are some not even needed? Below is the list from the ASRock site:
Drivers
Realtek high definition audio driver
INF driver
Intel Management Engine driver ver:10.0.0.1204
Intel Management Engine driver ver:10.0.31.1000_5M
Intel Rapid Start driver
Intel Smart Connect driver
Realtek Lan driver
Lan driver
AppCharger
SATA Floppy Image
ASMedia SATA3 Driver
Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver and utility
ASMedia USB 3.0 driver
Intel USB 3.0 driver
VGA driver
Utilities
ASRock 3TB+ Unlocker Utility
A-Tuning utility
Intel Rapid Start Utility
Intel Smart Connect Utility
APP Shop
OrbwebME
ASRock XFast LAN Utility
I really only want to install what's needed and I don't even know what some of these are. If you could provide some guidance I would appreciate it.
Thanks
Don't install any of the utilities - we have seen a spate of BSOD's caused by the extra's that accompany the motherboard installation DVD.
Install the others initially, and any that Windows Updates offers, until you have a nice stable system. Then we can look at updates.
Steve has a lot of experience with the AzRock stuff, so lets see if he agrees or has other advice.
p40whk, Honestly it really depends on what you are doing and how you are going to set up your system.
I would definitely download them from Asrock's Web Site for your board
You will need
Realtek high definition audio driver
INF driver
Intel Management Engine driver ver:10.0.0.1204
Intel Management Engine driver ver:10.0.31.1000_5M - Although I am not familiar wit 2 IME's It is most likely different versions of the same driver, just install the latest version.
Realtek Lan driver
Lan driver
ASMedia SATA3 Driver
Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver and utility - This one is debatable, Golden will probably advise against it.
ASMedia USB 3.0 driver
Intel USB 3.0 driver
Those are all you will probably need. After you do the install and updates, go to device manager and look for any yellow triangles, right click it and select properties. If it needs a driver, go to the web site and download it, but you really shouldn't. Make sure when you do the install, you have only the SSD you want to install Windows on connected. Any other drives, you can remove just 1 cable from it. You will do better if your SSD with Windows is connected to sata port 0 or 1.
The Asrock Utilities cause a lot of people problems or don't work right, others it does not hurt at all. If you are just looking for a good stable set up I would suggest not installing them at all. If you have any questions, I will be happy to help. Also, be sure not to install any of their 'free' software such as Dameon Tools or any of that stuff.
Well,
Got the new motherboard, processor, SSD installed following all the directions you guys provided. Was running fine then I installed Firefox. Was trying to import my old bookmarks when I had a BSOD.
Attached is the DM Log:
It's still saying hard drive.
That's the file system on the hard drive. It's a Windows update but that's still the file system. Later in the dump it says the graphics driver, but I think that is a victim of the BSOD. Let me show you. It's the same as the other as I recall, this is not the blame, but it shows the sequence leading up to the crash. There arte several dozen references just like this.Code:******************************************************************************* * * * Bugcheck Analysis * * * ******************************************************************************* Use !analyze -v to get detailed debugging information. BugCheck 24, {1904fb, fffff88003554748, fffff88003553fa0, fffff88001237c25} Probably caused by : Ntfs.sys ( Ntfs!NtfsAcquireExclusiveFcb+65 ) Followup: MachineOwner
