BSOD when running bittorrent overnight/possible related ext HDD issues
Warning: long text
Hello people of seven forums. I've recently made a new computer, with these specs:
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
CPU: AMD FX-8320
Motherboard: ASUS M5A97 R2.0
Memory: 8 GB GeIL DRAGON 1600 (2x4GB)
Graphics Card: Sapphire R9 280X Dual-X
Hard Drives: 1 TB Internal Seagate Barracuda, 1 TB Seagate External
PSU: Corsair VS550 80+ Gold
Case: Sentry GS-6000
Coolin: DeepCool GAMMAXX 300
WiFi adapter: D-Link DWA-510
Although the problem is related to this computer, I think I need to backup a little, since my external HDD has been experiencing problems for a long time.
About 10 months ago, I was running Windows 7 x64 on my old computer. The Windows was experiencing problems so I decided to upgrade to Windows 8. I did so, and ever since, I'd been experiencing problems with ownership/permissions on the external HDD. I unhooked it while installing the Windows, just to be sure. Anyway, I did fix some of these problems, but I would still run into some files that I couldn't modify. Anyway, after getting this new build, I decided to move some of the stuff from the ext HDD to the new internal one since it was getting full. I moved about 130 GB of data, but it crashed at the end of the moving because of the said permissions, it couldn't delete some of the leftover files. I had to pull out the device and I spent several minutes minutes fixing it (changing permissions/ownership, etc) on occasion it would just crash when opening the folder. Also, on the old computer, sometimes while downloading on the external HDD with utorrent, I would get a "can't find specified location" error and I had to pull the power on the ext HDD and reconnect to fix it. There's the HDD problem.
On the new computer, I did get a BSOD at day one but that was probably due to old VGA drivers. Now, all drivers are up to date, except perhaps the WiFi adapter since I couldn't find new drivers for it anywhere. This BSOD while using utorrent has been going on for many days. Every time, I leave the computer downloading overnight (I download on the external HDD), I wake up to a restarted computer due to BSOD. I though it might be a result of me setting to hiberante after the downloads completed, but not checking that didn't help either (since I've left it to download during the day while I was out and it didn't crash). Last night, I was downloading the source SDK from Steam and I put up a couple of other downloads with bittorrent. I woke and, unlike most nights, I didn't find the "after BSOD" error window, but it was obvious it had crashed. Steam or bittorrent weren't running and bittorrent had only downloaded a very small portion of the file. I tried to open bittorrent but it wouldn't run. I tried killing the process with task manager, but it did nothing. Steam ran fine though. I tried rebooting... it got stuck at "shutting down" and I had to hard reset. After booting up, my external HDD wasn't recognized (didn't show up on my computer) and I had to pull the plug. After getting recognized, Windows said it had problem and it needed to be fixed, so I let it fix it.
And here's the whole story.
