Windows 7: Windows 7 freezes when left alone

Windows 7 freezes when left alone

I am running windows 7 (7100x64) off a relatively new HP laptop and whenever I leave my computer alone for a while it goes to sleep and freezes. I then turned off sleep function on the hp settings and if I leave the thing alone for a while it still freezes without going into sleep mode. However the problem does not occur when i close the laptop and then open it up later - then it kicks back into life like normal.

I made the switch with a clean install from vista and I didn't have these problems on that system. Does anyone know if this is a common problem with an easy-ish solution? i am no computer expert and would appreciate some advice on what I should do - should I re-install windows and is it possible to do that without losing my settings / files?

yes I was already doing that power plan thing as I had thought the problem was with the sleep function - it does help but it doesn't exactly solve the problem. if I wanted to live with an operating system that doesn't do what i wanted I would have stuck with Vista

i seem to have cured it by updating the Nvidia Geforce drivers to the lastest beta version...
I was tempted to do so by the promise of 'Over 200 bugfixes'

So far so good...i am under the impression it had troubles when bringing the monitor out of standby..

windows 7 7100X64

I have done all the things recomended:

installed latest nvidia driver
turned off sleep for hard disk (is this risky by the way?)
Turned off sleep when open

and the results:

It does not freeze permanently now, it will look like a normal freeze and then i leave it alone for like a minute and the whole thing comes back to life - earlier this would be done and I would lose sound but now sound comes back ain't great but nor is it as bad as before
