Random BSOD and freezes after new build

I wish that wasn't necessary. What case do you have? You may be better off getting a new case.

I installed the card today in the top slot and it made me reinstall the driver so i followed the procedure from yesterday and when the driver installed my link width droped from x16 back to x1. I went to twitch to test anyway and the pc froze in 5 sec. Case is standard mid tower the card is just way too big.

if the card is set in the slot right, the case size shouldn't matter, for that. It may matter for some other things, but not for that. Go into bios and see if bios can 'see' the card. If it can, see if you have some options to change the link width of the pcie slot. The optimized defaults should have done that for you. Plus, are you sure you installed the correct driver?

Go to device manager and expand display adaptors and see if it says R9-290.If it does, the OS is recognizing your card and the drivers are installed. Download GPUz GPU-Z Video card GPU Information Utility (always watch for add ons) open it up and you will see in the middle about half way down on the right side Bus Interface. Whatever it shows, click the question mark next to it and run the rendering test and see what it changes to.

OK, that's better, but your card should be X16 V3.0, although I doubt if it makes much difference. I have an Intel system, I'm not sure how the AMD bios is laid out. You can check your manual and it should show you. On mine, I go to the advanced tab and click on System Agent configuration, under that there are several sub categories. Mine is Northbridge PCIE Configuration. The top X16 slot will probably say Auto. The drop down box may enable you to select GEN 3. I really don't believe your card is fast enough to make much difference, but it will make you feel better.

That would be the best thing. You can go broke replacing parts.
