Yes you can run one stick in slot two for testing purposes no problem.

As Boozad has said mate I have done the works and jerks with four sticks - with four slots (a lot of work) and the "secondary slots usually 2 and 4 maybe a bit slower without slot 1 being filled.

Normally the arrangement is 1 and 3 then 2 and 4 for a four stick set up but I have seen them with 2 and 4 being the "primary" slots for the sticks.

Plus remember that it is always advisable to use matched pairs or quad sets of the same RAM brand ie
G-Skill abcd1234 XYZ (same speed and volume (GB) ) that come in the same pack they will work in other combos but tend to have more problems than the ideal set up.

So G-Skill abcd 1235 XYZ 4GB or 8GB labeled on each stick and as I said out of the same pack (therefore come from the same batch off the production line)

Memtest updates:

Ok guys so I'm going to need some help on diagnosing my memory/slots. Here are the results.

When I test both sticks it would pass 3 times and fail. So I started testing each ram stick.

Ram#1 in slot#1 passed (12 passes, around 17 hours)

Ram#1 in slot #2 failed...nothing actually. When I put ram1 in slot2 my computer kept power cycling on and off every 2-3 seconds or so. I thought hmmm maybe a bad slot then, but honestly I have no idea. Anyways I tested ram#2.

Ram#2 in slot #1 passed (10 passes, around 13 hours)

Ram#2 in slot #2 passed (10 passes, around 13 hours).....no power cycling nothing it ran fine.

I was kinda hoping ram2 would fail in slot 2 cause that means I have a bad slot but now I'm really confused with these results and I have no idea what it could be.

Any help on this would be great because I don't know now if I have a faulty ram stick, motherboard, or something completely different. Thanks in advance.

Have you tried stick #1 back in slot #2 since stick #2 passed in there?

Ok so after my last test which was stick2 in slot 2 and it passed i tried stick#1 again back into slot 2. It power cycled. So then I tried stick 1 in slot one. Same thing. SO then I tried a combination of stick#2 slot 1/stick#1 slot #2 power cycled and stick #1 slot #1/stick #2 slot #2 power cycled. It seems that every time I try using stick#1 whether by itself or with stick 2 my computer power cycles. So maybe stick 1 is bad? Its weird because I tested stick1 the other day in slot 1 and it passed....plus the other day i had both sticks running and it didn't powercycle...if i do have a faulty ram stick could this occur? Meaning it could start up my computer sometimes and other times it wont? Thanks in advance.
