    BSOD on startup, error 116 atikmpag.sys / atikmdag.sys

    BSOD Log
    Attachment 361478

blue screens on startup but only after the windows logo seems to hang,
since I believe the error is a sort of timeout failsafe?

    Specs:
    Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
    ASRock z77 extreme4 / ASUS P8z77-V LX
    i7-3770 intel processor 3.5ghz
    AMD Radeon HD 7770
    Alpha 700 watt power supply
    AMD Catalyst 14.12 64bit / 14.9 64bit
    x2 2TB HDD // C: is 1.4/1.8tb full, F: is 1.8/1.8tb

    Stuff to know:
    - if AMD drivers are installed, I can't boot without getting black screen / BSOD unless its safe mode, but it forces 640x480 VGA
    - if no AMD drivers installed, my computer uses VGA but can boot normal and safe mode but locked at 640x480 resolution
    - I can run 1920x1080 (native) 32bit non-safe mode with integrated graphics card

Problem: computer crashed one day while playing a game with vertical black&white lines covering the entire screen, restarted only for windows to boot the windows logo (loading) screen and get hung up with a black screen and NO cursor before even getting to windows login. It almost looked like my computer was going to sleep then getting woken while still remaining black/blank. (a quick single pulsate) after numerous attempts at solving the problem, I believed it was a motherboard issue as my CPU, PSU and RAM worked and passed various tests. I switched out my ASUS P8z77-V for an ASRock z77 extreme4 only to have it repeat the same problem. I tried uninstalling the amd catalyst from control panel, rebooting to safe mode, uninstalling the drivers from device manager, running DDU + CCleaner to remove any traces, turned off auto driver update, rebooted and downloaded the 14.9 driver, a downgrade from the most recent 14.12 driver version and rebooted in hopes it would solve my problem. This time I no longer get hung up with a black screen, but instead get the blue screen of death BBCode 116 atikmdag.sys / atikmpag.sys

What I've tried to Fix it that didn't work:
    - uninstalled AMD/ATI files and traces including registry and tried updating/reinstalling newest versions
    - virus/spyware scanned everything with three different programs
    - replaced my original ASUS p8z77 motherboard with a ASRock z77
    - uninstalled windows update KB2670838
    - reseated GPU, CPU, RAM, Motherboard
    - tested power supply
    - ran memory tests and passed
    - tried using 14.9 / 14.12 amd catalyst drivers
    - tried the windows expand method for atikmdag.sys / atikmpag.sys
    - sfc /scannow with flawless results
    - memtest
    - all files on HDD seem to work, and are non-corrupted

Display failure, and display outage. It is 14.12 driver installed there. Let us check what happens with another display driver version.

Have a little try. Uninstall the installed display driver using Display Driver Uninstaller. Then install the CCC 14.4 WHQL only.

Let us know the resulting situation.

sorry for the late reply, I am dealing with another issue as well whenever I use my original ASUS P8z77-V LX motherboard (only one ram card works at a time, otherwise I can't boot with any post/beep/monitor with DRAM_LED being solid red. each card works in all slots, but never both at the same time; 1:3/2:4. Both cards are DDR3-1600 x2 4GB) however, uninstalling AMD Catalyst drivers and files in safe mode via program files, DDU, CCleaner and reinstalling your recommended 14.4 driver I boot past the ASUS BIOS and Windows Logo, but get hung up with a black screen that darkens and lightens in a single pulsate manner without a cursor.

EDIT: not sure if it matters, but here's my CPU-Z txt just incase you or someone else needs it.

Your statements and the uploaded files gives a notion that the graphics card is failing. Apply any other card there and see how it goes.

the tech god! praise this man.

I decided the graphics card wasn't improving from here on that after your opinion and multiple tests.
As a last resort I cleaned the thermal compound off the chip and surrounding it including any remaining dust with 50% rubbing alcohol, completely unscrewed it but didn't remove anything (besides the heatsink of course), finally I took an oven and placed down aluminum foil on a baking sheet, with four aluminum foil balls on each corner, and finally placed my Radeon HD 7770 on top of the foil stand. 375 for eight minutes sharp and let it cool down for 35 minutes with the oven fan running. replaced all screws, plugged everything back in, reseated it and ASUS BIOS booted, along successfully with loading screen and windows log in at the native resolution on my graphics card! beautiful 1920x1080 in 32bit color at 144hz opposed to the ugly VGA 640x480. I have not tested this on any demanding files, software or games yet. Will post back soon after more tests.

tldr: it was somewhat successful after the graphics card oven trick [Currently]

Update: after launching steam and csgo I believe I received the "vertical lines of death" and my computer instantly turned off but the fans were still running and the GPU fan was running very high.

    Here is my CPU-Z file reading the GFX card;

not quite sure what the cause of the vertical lines are or what exactly triggers besides it overheating when trying to run a game is my guess? can't really test for temperatures because it always shuts down when the crash occurs.

Overheating is a real cause of such an issue, though it seems that you have minimized it. You can monitor temps using either Speccy or HWInfo.

Overclocking is another possible cause. If your computer is overclocked, set the hardware components back to default settings.

And, always there is a chance of the graphics card failing itself. At the present situation, you can test it. Stress test the Graphics Card using Furmark.Take a screenshot of the furmark window before closing it. Upload the screenshot for us. Also let us know if you have experienced any crash/BSOD and/or artifacts during the test.
