Acer Aspire x1700 Freezing

Another freezing question.

I did a clean install of Win7x64 on an Acer x1700. Locks up after about 10 minutes of watching online videos from hulu, netflix, etc. Complete freeze: no keyboard or mouse response, video freeze, audio chatter, etc. Computer only used to browse internet so no other software other than browser loaded. Ran memtest86+ for about 5 hrs, no errors. Updated chipset drivers from NVIDIA website. No changes to BIOS (AMI) from factory preset.

At a loss for what to do next.

Thanks.

I would take a look at your antivirus software. What antivirus software are you running? I have the same system and am using Microsoft Security Essentials.

No antivirus loaded. This was a clean install. I've kept all third party stuff off the machine until I can figure this out. I did notice that Windows Defender is installed. Not sure if this is from Windows 7 or a leftover from the previous Vista. But, that's it.

Hi.

Install this driver if you didn't already.

Make sure the latest version of Flash is installed for the browser you're using.

If it won't install for you, leave the folder at C:\NVIDIA alone and don't delete it.

Then right click on the graphics adapter in device manager. Properties. Details tab. Change dropdown to hardware ids. Then copy and paste results to here.

Flash was updated.

Appreciate the link to the NVIDIA driver, but I didn't download since I have release 191.07 installed for G100 (desktop vs. notebook 186 release). Here are the hardware ID's from the driver properties:

PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_06E6&SUBSYS_9840174B&REV_A1
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_06E6&SUBSYS_9840174B
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_06E6&CC_030000
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_06E6&CC_0300

Thanks for the help.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

I am having a similar issue after upgrading to Windows 7 Professional 64-bit from Vista home premium 64-bit.

I tried flashing the BIOS using the most up to date I could find on acer's website, no difference. Not that I had any inclination that it would make a difference but I tried the new video driver: nothing. I've also installed a newer driver for my Zonet wireless USB adapter (ZEW2500P)...still no dice. I have tried another wireless adapter, same problem. I also uninstalled any windows updates that may have installed since loading the OS and I have had the problem since.

I notice that it tends to coincide with when I download data at a high speed (1-2MB/s). After a number of minutes at that speed the networking portions of the computer will just lock up completely and no websites or other internet data can be accessed. I can't load the network portions of the control panel or otherwise view anything about the wireless adapter. However, left to its own the problem will arise after a certain time passes. It is a debilitating problem because when it strikes it prevents windows from shutting down (it will just hang at the "shutting down" screen...I left it like that for half an hour). I don't know what else to do.

Anyone have any suggestions? Did you resolve the problem, simmenthal??

Neither Windows 7, antivirus nor any drivers were the issue. I did a clean reinstall of Vista 64 and still had the problem. The entire system kept freezing: keyboard, mouse, etc. It was happening more frequently so I finally called Acer support. The phone support was useless, but, luckily it was still under warranty. I sent it back to Acer for repair and they changed out the video card and updated the BIOS. I've been running for about a month and so far, so good. Still haven't loaded Windows 7, though. (Want to be sure system runs with factory loaded Vista first.)

i know your problem. windows 7 has a problem with computers with nvidia chipsets and 4gb's of ram. download this windows update from here... You encounter problems when you move data over USB from a Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer that has an NVIDIA USB EHCI chipset and at least 4GB of RAM . i currently have the same system. this worked perfectly.

so i have tried downloading that file and i tells me that its not made for my computer... I'm currently on Windows 7 now and seeing if this issue has been resolved via MS and its parts of the Windows Update .. we will see, but also noticed that it would happen when download torrents, and/or moving files from my external hd to system hd
