    W7 freezing & hanging

I put W7 on my sons new laptop that had a free upgrade when we bought it. It is now freezing and hanging.

Someone said we needed to reinstall W7 to fix it. But this seems odd, I was wondering if you guys had different advice before I go through the whole installation again only to have the same results.

    Hi and welcome

While I agree with the re-install you really should find out why it is freezing now so that it doesnt happen on the clean iinstall.
I would look in event viewer (type event viewer in search) go to the windows logs>applications tab. Look for errors (red "X" in left column) that have app hang, app crash, etc. You might want to wait till it happens next then go to event viewer to narrow the search. there will be many errors. find the most frequent applicable error and note the EVENT ID, and source code and tell us what they are
    Lets start there

That advice is correct. But, I think if it is not sucessful, take your DVD, install it in your computer and go through the reinstall process, however when you are given the choice, chose repair. Technically, it is not necessary, but backup everything that is important to you.
But before you attempt the repair., try a check disc for errors (long version) and then do a defrag.
Installing a new OS does a lot to your HD.

Ok took a while, my son got invovled and had to count up an catagorize each error.

11606 (over 20 errors) source MSiInstaller
    1024 (16 errors) source MSiInstaller
1002 (13 errors) source Application Hang
1000 (6 errors) source Application Error

    other ones wre 1530 (3 errors), and 11, 63, 3007 and 8194 all with 1 error.

Yes thanks to my son for categorizing them all...

You do have errors (and a lot). What I would want you to do is try to repair them.
computer>C:>properties>check now. Actually check those two boxes, the errors should be repaired. It is not necessary to actually log them at this juncture

    thanks,
but after no one responded, I went with the reinstall.. My son has had it for a day and ahalf, and he has not told me about any more hanging/freezeing issues, so hopefully this solved the problem. I don't quite understand what is different in the 2nd install from the first, that this would work, but it seemed to do the trick.

But if it does start up again, I would love to try your suggestions seems less time consuming and not so much wear & tear on the computer.

If there are no more problems, I would strongly suggest making an image of your system, in case something happens in the future... See Brinks tutorial -=> Here

Make sure you check disk for errors and defag. Installing does a number on your hard drive.

The re-install is that fastest way to get back on track
    just for your information
error 11606 is a cannot access location. either from where the app was, or from where the file wa to be installed
error 1000 source application is a DEP (data execution prevention) error.

As long as the re-install has fixed the provlem you are golden.
