It's an mxm gpu so it can be removed but a used replacement will cost more than 200. I just need this laptop to function for 3 more weeks because I would have put together a new computer by that time.

Ok mate I think that if you can get by with this nonsense going on then it is probably best we see how it goes - unless the problem gets really bad.

That must be quite an old machine? as I have only seen those in older machines most of the later machine have those built in GPU's.

I'm actually downloading ubuntu right now to see if I get the same freezing problem on it.
I bought the laptop in 2009 so yeah I've had it for quite a while now.

mxm is still used today in high end gaming laptops but cards like a 980m cost about $700 while being about a third less powerful than a desktop 980 which goes for $500.

Hm it isn't as old as I imagined it and yes I know about the newer stuff having the separate GPU as I bought an Asus ROG gamer laptop last October and it came with the GTX 860M in addition to the Intel graphics.

Ok have you used Ubuntu or Linux before as I use it / them to retrieve data from dead drives etc
If you haven't then this is my little ditty to work with it

BOOTABLE UBUNTU

Make a bootable Ubuntu disk http://www.ubuntu.com/download

Set the BIOS to boot from theoptical when the machine boots it will show you a screen with TRY or INSTALL> select TRYnot INSTALL

When it is finished - it takes verylittle time you will get a screen like in the pic .

Open the drive you want > Userand dig down until you get to the data / settings you may be able to copy /paste the material you want to an external source or other installed drive doingthis.

I am not sure if it will but I haverecovered tons of data etc using this method both on "dead" or justplain drives that you cannot get data from using Windows.

The pic is what you see screen wise -there is also the Linux Mint MATE distro as well and there is some info in here by one of out senior members if you would like it I will try and hunt down where it is

emgray mate I just found the Linux Mint one I told you about it is here https://onedrive.live.com/view.aspx?...53&app=WordPdf if you cannot see it there then here
Imaging with free Macrium whichever you see you will need a Microsoft account now a it is in One Drive - a rotten nuisance but I ma guessing it is being done that way because of whatever "they" see as competition??

So I've been using Ubuntu on the laptop for 2 days now and I'm still having the freezes but the frequency is much less. On Windows I could expect to get two in an hour but on Ubuntu I get one every five or six hours.

I guess this rules out any software issue though I am curious about why there is a large difference in the time it takes for a freeze to occur between the two operating systems.

Now just a thought have you get access to a digital multimeter ? if so just check the power adaptor's voltage for us.

Now the voltage on the battery can also be viewed if you can keep the machine running long enough using this - PART A:

Using HW Info

PART A:

You can test the volts onthe PSU with HW Info HWiNFO,HWiNFO32/64 - Download <download the right bit version and close the right hand window select Sensorsand scroll down to the power section where you will see what the volts aredoing see my pic. In my pic the section (Nuvoton)with VBATT is a dead give away you are in the section for the rail voltages. There are other section titles and one that pops up often is ITE

Now the voltage on thedifferent rails have to be within 5% =+/- of what is required or the machinewill not work properly if at all.

See this for the railvoltage info

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/power-supply-specifications-atx-reference,3061.html (Section 2.)

The original right handwindow shows the machine running and is handy for that but for looking at thecomponents in some detail close it and use the main left hand side panel

FOR OTHER COMPONENTS

PART B:

Open each small squarewith + in it on the section the components are in and then click on theindividual component/s (it willhighlight in blue) - in the right hand side will appear all sorts of detailsincluding brands speeds and other essential info that particular device. Seepic for example.

The battery voltage seems ok. I don't have a multimeter at the moment but because I get crashes when it's on battery and not under stress it can't be a power adapter fault can it?

No mate it can't - I was just wondering if the adaptor was even delivering the correct voltage. If you say the battery is ok then we must look elsewhere.

I think maybe a test on the drive is best next try as if it is the original drive then there would be some wear and tear on it.
As it is a WD try this WD Support / Downloads / SATA & SAS / WD VelociRaptor if tis doesn't find anything I think a physical test with this is a good idea at least it will pick up the non software issues - see my pic on how to run it MiniTool Partition Wizard | Best partition magic alternative for Windows PC and Server

Then I would even start at some basic stuff and run these if the machine stays awake for long enough.

So I did all the hard drive tests and nothing seems to be wrong with it.

One thing I forgot to try is running in safe mode and after more than a day on it I still haven't had a single freeze.

Edit:
So I still don't have issues in safe mode but the freezes appear even during a diagnostic startup.
