As suggested, leave verifier running for 48h.

A program is never 100%, usually when testing with recommended software you can assume it is OK, though it happens that a program is mistaking, but that is rare.
I would for now rule out every hardware component that has been tested.

Still nothing. Apparently Windows found nothing wrong with my drivers, at least not wrong enough to crash.

    Diagnostics Test

     System File Check

    Please try following:
    • Open an admin command prompt
    • Copy/paste "sfc/scannow" (without quotes) and press enter
    • When it finished reboot your system
    • Open again an admin command prompt
    • Enter sfc/scannow again

If sfc/scannow does NOT say "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violation", please upload the cbs.log file located at {windows partition}\Windows\Logs\CBS\, if the file is too large try a 3rd party uploader like dropbox, onedrive, google drive, mediafire etc.
System File Check(SFC a.k.a. Windows Resource Protection) needs to have your system rebooted in order for sfc to try to fix the problems that it finds.

I'd already done that before coming here, but I just did it again; no integrity violation. Re-booted, ran it, once again: No integrity violation.

Please check your motherboard manufacturer for BIOS updates.
Please make sure your BIOS has the optimal configuration, so load the optimal settings and if needed change here and there some settings for normal functioning.

    Is the hardware properly seated?

My BIOS version is 1603, the latest according to the ASUS site.
I don't normally fiddle around in the BIOS unless someone who knows what they're doing tells me otherwise, as I'm more likely to break than fix things. Well, one thing: I disabled Cool'n'Quiet some time last week to see if that would help (which it didn't).

There are no massive amounts of dust inside the case, I regularly use a brush to clean the fans and everything. The only place I can't reach is inside the PSU, though as far as I can see it's not that bad in there either; I'm guessing that getting a compressed air can or whatever it's called and blow through can't hurt anyway.

I can only assume everything is seated properly, nothing seems loose or lopsided, cables aren't touching or blocking anything.

What are the 3.3v, 5v and 12v values? You can find them in the BIOS.

    Those values are fine.

I have read your OP a few times, just to keep some information in my head for the future.
As the crashes only happen with 1 game, it certainly is not a hardware issue. If it was a hardware issue, more problems would arise.

That said, I'd like to focus on the software, to see if any program could be involved with it.

Is there any program active in the background?

    Diagnostics Test

     Clean boot

    Please try the following:
    • Open taskmanager
      • Go to the tab startup
      • disable everything
    • Search msconfig and open it
      • Go to the tab services
      • Check 'hide microsoft services'
      • Uncheck all other services
      • Click apply and click ok
    • Reboot if asked

See if the problem persist, if the problem does not persist enable in the startup tab in taskmanager 1 item and in the services tab in msconfig also 1 service, reboot and see if the problem persist. Keep doing this until you find the culprit or there is nothing left.

With all the random testing I've done so far, the only program that was always on at the same time as the game was Steam which is unavoidable. That aside I have tried to eliminate everything - browser, Thunderbird, CCC, IM etc.

I'll see what happens with start-up and services, although due to the sort-of-randomness of the crashes it might take a while. Until then, thanks again for walking me through all this, much appreciated!

Side note, I've been using CCleaner for start-up stuff so long I forgot how to do it in Windows. Maybe while I'm testing there's something obvious to find there.
(I'm not sure why the Realtek HD Audio thing shows up twice, btw. Also, as I've read that DaemonTools seems to interfere with things at times, I don't have that installed anymore and the registry seems to be free of leftovers from that.)

Edit: Apparently I can't disable avast at all. It really wants to protect me.
