The words in the thread title "mostly in standby" gives an alternate meaning; but as the bugcheck is stop 0xF4; I would suggest you to test your HDD at first.
SeaTools for DOS and Windows - How to Use
Take both the short test and the long test. Let us know the results.

Hi,

seatools run short test with no errors, long test will crash after while with same 0xf4 error - you were probably right about this.

fellow dont have some spare computer or spare disc to test, any ideas how to test it thoroughly and determine real fault? (there still could be some other problem with mainboard/disk controller/RAM??).

Thanks

Enough to say that the HDD is failing.

If you want to be more sure, run Seatools for DOS. Long Test of Seatools for DOS will make it clear.

You asking for surety in remote assistance?

I prefer to keep away from this question. I have done what I could do. Rest is on you, because it is your computer.
