    Yes, in this case I think I'll have to, because I've got 4 drives in a raid, 2 optical drives, and an SSD.

    I was really hoping a simple after marked SATA card would work.

    Is RAID a must for you? I think mirroring using RAID1 is not a proper idea. You get backup of your data properly, that will be much better. Have a mechanism for incremental backups, it will be the best, IMO.

    RAID is problematic.

    For this machine it's a necessity. I suppose that I could just move everything off the four drives and free up two more ports.

    What about just a plain sata card and not a RAID card? This is a rosewill card and we were using it only as a driver for the CD drives.

    RAID is not necessary for a machine. It is necessary for the user.

    I would suggest you to have a bigger drive and use AHCI.
