Computer turning off / not outputting to monitors - BSOD 0x00000124

Hello all, about a month ago I had a coworker tell me that his computer was either randomly turning off completely, or the computer stays running but stops outputting to his two monitors and their LEDs go from green to amber. When the computer stops outputting to the monitors he has to press the reset button on the computer. I asked him if he was doing anything in particular during the times these issues happened, and he said he wasn’t.

First, I checked the Windows Power Management settings and everything looked good. I also checked the CPU temperatures at different points throughout a day with CoreTemp, Core 0 was around 34°C and Core 1 was around 35°C. I opened up the case and blew it out with compressed air.

A few days later he said after that there was an instance where a system tray notification appeared saying “Display driver stopped responding and has recovered. Display driver NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 358.91 stopped responding and has successfully recovered.” So I updated the video driver to the latest version. However, after that there were still instances when the computer either turned off or stopped outputting to the monitors.

Next I replaced the 380 watt power supply with a 750 watt power supply. But afterwards he said there was an instance where the computer turned off, then a few days later it blue screened. This is the only time to my knowledge that the system has blue screened. The bluescreen showed "The system encountered an uncorrectable hardware error" with a STOP 0x00000124 message.

I then replaced the video card with an XFX AMD Radeon HD 6670 card and also replaced the RAM in his machine. About two days later he told me his mouse and keyboard stopped working so he restarted the computer to fix the problem. And the next day the computer completely turned off on him again.

Today I ran Malwarebytes, Adwcleaner, TDSKiller, and GMER rootkit scanner. Adwcleaner found a few items and deleted them. The computer hasn’t had any issues since, but I’m thinking the issue will crop up again eventually since they seem to be spaced out over a few days.

Would one of you fine folks mind checking over my DM Log Collector attachment to see if there is anything pointing to what could be the cause? Just before I end up taking the heatsink off the processor, cleaning it, and then reapplying thermal paste, or replacing the entire motherboard all together (I don’t see any blown or leaking capacitors but we have had motherboard issues with this particular model of computer in the past).

    Thanks for the help!

It seems the CPU had send a read request to the L0 cache, but there appeared to be a problem with the data on the bus.
As the Nvidia display driver is being flagged it may be very possible that the Nvidia GPU was the cause because the 0x124 is known as a hardware crash.

Thanks for helping me out, axe0! I really do appreciate you debugging the dump file and finding out the issue may very well have been the Nvidia graphics card. The issue of the computer randomly turning off used to happen pretty frequently, but since I swapped out the Nvidia graphics card with an XFX AMD Radeon HD 6670 graphics card, the computer has only turned off on him once. If the computer keeps turning off on its own, do you think the motherboard would be the next thing I should take a look at?

May I ask if you used WinDBG to debug the dump file? I was thinking of learning how to and wasn't sure if this would be a good place to start: WinDBG - Install and Configure for BSOD Analysis

    Thanks.

When a pc keeps shutting down the first thing I would check is the PSU as the PSU is the power source.

You might want to read WinDBG - The Basics for Debugging Crash Dumps in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums :)

In case you would like to know, here is the full output (including a few changes I've made for standard running a few commands)
With a bugcheck 0x124 you can run the !errrec command on the 2nd parameter
    Code:
    *******************************************************************************
    *                                                                             *

Thanks for the WinDBG link, will definitely check it out!

As part of my initial troubleshooting before replacing the video card, I did replace the power supply but unfortunately the system still ended up turning off on its own. It has only turned off once since replacing the video card, so here's to hoping that it doesn't happen again. It seems after replacing the power supply, video card, and RAM, would the only thing left to look at if it happens again be the motherboard? I will report back in a few days with an update.

    Thanks for the help.

In the BIOS there are the 3.3v, 5v and 12v values that can also cause various problems if they aren't right.

Unfortunately I was just told that the computer turned completely off on him again unexpectedly. I looked in the BIOS and did not see 3.3v, 5v and 12v values. If I already replaced the power supply, video card, and RAM, what would the next step be? Thanks.

Could you post the system specs please, I do have the files but they don't contain all the specs and I don't use all the time my laptop when I'm online.

I actually just went over to the machine a few minutes ago to check something out, and it was completely froze up. Tapping the Num lock and Caps lock didn't toggle them on and off, and the time in the system tray was stuck at the time it must have froze.

It is a Windows 7 Pro x86 machine
Intel Pentium Dual Core E5700 3.0GHz 2M Processor
    2GB DDR2 800MHz PC6400 RAM
    MSI G31TM-P21 mATX motherboard
XFX AMD Radeon HD 6670 1GB video card
    Corsair 750w power supply

I checked to see if there were any BIOS updates, but there were not. It is currently running V4.7, which according to this page (https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/supp...html#down-bios) is the most current version.

Let me know if you need any more info. Thanks.

If you or the owner tries to boot into safe mode, does any problem occur there except for the power problem?
