Windows 7 sometimes does not complete boot

This is a strange problem I have had since both upgrading my hardware and Windows 7 at the same time. It occurred with the final Release Candidate, and is currently occurring with the final version of Windows 7.

What happens, is sometimes (maybe 2 out of 5 times) when I boot Windows 7 does not complete booting; and just hangs at the startup screen. I then reset my machine, and choose to "Start Windows Normally", rather than "Repair" when given the option. Then, it almost always starts up fine after that. Sometimes I'll have to repeat the process; but it is usually fine. And then, sometimes everything just starts up fine. Once I'm in Windows, everything runs perfectly.

I have very little idea what is going, since it is not determanistically reproduceable. It does seem to have something to do with USB power not reaching all devices correctly on boot up, since; sometimes when I perform my restart on a failed boot - i get no response from my keyboard. I am fairly certain that my PSU is having no problems powering everything.

My motherboard is an Evga nForce 730i.
    Attached are:
    Intel 8800 E8500 Core2Duo
    2 SATA drives
    1 External WD drive
    Belkin n52te keyboard
    Logitech g15 keyboard
    Logitech Mx518 mouse

I am not using any USB hubs, am not overclocking, and all my software drivers are up to date. My motherboard BIOS is at the most recent flashed version I could find.

Troubleshooting steps I have taken so far, is to try booting with different devices unplugged in different combinations (no DVD, no External HD, etc.) to see if an individual device was causing the issue. So far, the issue re-occurs regardless of which device is unplugged. With the exceptions of keyboard, mouse, and HDs.

Any help or others who have run into this issue would be appreciated!

    Hi.

Check on your specific RAM modules at the maker's site. Note the Vdimm (Voltage), timings and frequency.

    Then, adjust the bios accordingly.

If you need to know your exact modules, use the spt tab of CPU-Z. It will tell you.

Okay, I tried the following -- I've set my Memory timings to what CPU-Z recommends.

I'll keep the thread posted as to whether to problem continues to occur. Thanks!

Turned my PC off for 1 hour and then back on.

Same problem is still occurring with the recommened memory timings. It starts, then locks up half way through the boot. I restarted my machine and then it was fine.

Here are some interesting things in my event log when I shut down:
    Event ID: 7016
    Level: Error
Message: The NVIDIA Display Driver Service service has reported an invalid current state 32.
    And, on the next boot:

    Event ID: 41
    Level: Critical
Message: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

I had similar problems when I updated from XP Pro 32bit to Windows 7 Pro 64bit. I forgot I had overclocked my PC years ago.
Windows 7 advisor stated there would be a problem with the Winfast DTV2000H card before installing Win 7
I eventually solved the driver issues according to windows advisor but problems with boot up persisted.
Removed card to try to track down problem.

I reverted back to default bios settings but problem persisted.

I eventually tried flashing my Asus P5K E WiFi AP mobo to latest bios version for 64bit and so far its been stable, but its only been a just over a week thought.

I will try overclocking on this OS later when I'm convinced its stable.

Just another option for you to try maybe.

opps...edit...didn't see that you had latest mobo bios.

Well.. the motherboard BIOS was flashed at the point of purchase. They said it was the latest; but I didn't do the operation, so maybe it's not right. I will try re-flashing it to the latest version to see if that has any effect.
