    BSOD at start (video driver....)

I've been trying to resolve a BSOD at startup error.

Win 7 Ultimate on newly formatted HD.

    1. have installed updated chipset and bios on MB.
    2. Installed Win 7 and got BSOD (pointing to nvlddmkm.sys)
    3. removed video driver and restarted with generic driver...system booted fine.
    4. Let win 7 update, and got BSOD again, pointing to nvlddmkm.sys
    5. again reverted to generic, and this time updated using the nvidia driver executable file on their website.
    6. BSOD pointing to nvlddmkm.sys
    7. verified that memory, MB, etc. was part of the approved set from ASUS.

    My hardware:

ASUS P6T6 WS Revolution with anywhere from 2 to 6 gig, depending on when I tested it.

    Core i7 920 cpu

    Nvidia GTX 285 video card

1TB SATA HD in IDE mode. (Someone previosuly told me to try AHCI, which was a red herring)

Anyone have thoughts about what to try next? I'm using the 64-bit version of Win 7, but have the same issue when I have tried the 32-bit version.

Have also tried one rev back of nvidia drivers, with same results. I can run Win 7 in generic video driver mode, but it crashed if I try to use the manufacturer's driver for the video card.

    Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Added minidump file, per the kind link below on how I should have asked for help.

Probably 0x116 stop error, unrelated to driver version for video card.

If you're overclocking anything, set to default speeds for testing.

thanks, I have set all bios defaults, and have nothing overclocked, so far as I can tell.

    STOP 0x116 information: BSOD Index

Simple to troubleshoot, difficult to fix
    Check:
    - BIOS (update to the latest version)
    - drivers (Uninstall the current drivers, then install the latest version for Win7 x64 from NVIDIA DRIVERS 195.62 WHQL )
    - temp's (check the card temps. Open the side of the case and point a fan at the card to see if that helps)

If none of this helps, then try another video card.

We've seen a lot of these recently - so I'd think about using System Restore to set the system back to before the crashes started.

Just for my own clarity, will you please tell me where you saw that it was a
    STOP 0x116 error?

I see "STOP: 0x1000007e" near the bottom of a "regenerated" blue screen, using one of the tools I downloaded. I'm not sure what to do with it, though.

    thanks!

We're guessing because you haven't posted the .dmp yet, as in the link I posted.

So we can say with greater accuracy once you do that.
Actually, right after you posted the link, I posted the dump files. (thanks for the link, BTW!)

I've posted them here again, in case that is easier.

    thanks in advance!

Did you add the .dmp file later on in an edit? Weird, because I didn't think it was there first time. I was guessing.

    Anyhow...I'm checking it now.

I would simply uninstall the driver in the normal method. Use Driver Sweeper from www.guru3d.com to further clean all NVIDIA stuff.

Extract from the latest driver download to C:\NVIDIA. Close installer after this happens.

Reboot to safe mode and install only the driver using the device manager.

Test like this and see how it goes.

I'd like to see these drivers get updated as well:

    Code:
    Rt64win7 Rt64win7.sys Thu Feb 26 04:04:13 2009
    netr28ux netr28ux.sys Wed Feb 25 21:49:17 2009
This will take care of the networking one for you:

Install "Win7 32/64 Auto Installation Program"

    Thanks for the suggestions!

    sigh....

    I did the following:

    1. booted into safe mode
    2. updated the realtek driver.
    2. uninstalled the nvidia card using the device manager.
    3. ran driver sweeper and cleaned the nvidia stuff from the win 7 install
    4. opened driver manager and installed the 195.62 driver using driver manager.
    5. rebooted into normal mode....and....
    6. BSOD again.

    My computer hates me...
