Windows 7: Windows 7 won't shut down cleanly when Live Messenger o

Hi everyone. This is my first post here. After Google failed me I tried getting help on the Microsoft Forum but the only advice I received was to try reinstalling, which I had already done.

I wasn't sure if this is the right forum for this. If not please let me know so I can correct the problem.

I am able to consistently and reliably recreate this problem. It happens more sporadically with other programs as well.

Windows 7 won't shut down or restart cleanly when Live Messenger or Yahoo Messenger are running. I installed Windows 7 on my home built Quad Core with 4GB RAM. It will reboot fine if Live Messenger and Yahoo Messenger are shut down but if they are open I get an "Application Error" dialog (see below) and have to confirm multiple times my desire to shut down. If I shut down one or the other application I still get an error from the one that is open.

I have reverted to a previous image of the hard drive and reinstalled the programs testing each one individually. I still have the problem.

Try running a memory test with Memtest86. You may also consider doing a Repair Install.

This is practically a clean install. I haven't done anything with it yet. I'm still in the process of installing my core programs. Why do you think there is a problem with my Memory or Installation?

Your memory could always be bad. Some memory ships DOA. You never know.

I didn't have this problem with this same machine with the Vista installation.

When running "Repair Install" it gets to "Expanding Windows files (18%) and then I get the error:
Windows installation encountered an unexpected error. Verify that the installation sources are accessible, and restart the installation.
Error code: 0xC0000005

This has happened twice and the error occurs after the first reboot. It gets to 18%, says it has to reboot, does so, then displays the error message.

I thought of one thing that may be relevent... After doing the clean install I moved my user directories to my D: drive using the directions here:

I dunno, you may consider doing a clean install. Just be sure to backup, first.

Many hours of trial and error finally determined the problem was caused by the Beta 64 bit version of Ultramon

Apparently the developer is slow to upgrade his product

Once I traced down the problem it was very easy to reproduce
install Ultramon problem occurs
uninstall Ultramon problem goes away

So no one else has to suffer the pain that I did listen up Google...
