alright... i google searched and cannot seem to answer how to run malwarebytes from my usb stick before my problem begins. i know how to change the boot order sequence - set it to boot from usb first. a friend of mine also suggested that it can be the MBR... as it sounds like it could be a boot record issue?

mmm no.

You run it like u'd run any other application you would usually install, start>all programs>Malwarebytes.

Remember we are doing the virus scan addressing the login problem, don't worry, a few of us are attending to different problems at a time, i myself got lost. :P

remember that the problem is the computer not being able to boot up past the windows loading screen, therefore i do not have access to the start menu. I installed malwarebytes to my external harddrive and during installation, updated it's virus definitions. i am able to get to command via pressing f8 during boot up and selecting dells "recover your pc" menu.

Hello Nano3,

Open up a copy of Device Manager. In the bottom pane, it shows a graphic, which makes it very easy to find which volumes have which letters.

Hope this helps,
~Jonathan

[the drive letter] should be the same, right?
Not right. The OS is the one responsible for remembering the driver letters. Now, the C drive is the OS drive, right? When you stick the HD in the other system, what letter does it have?

Try opening Disk Management. There are a number of ways to do that. The easiest way is to search for it in the Start box.

okay... ha ha. the problem right now is me trying to fix a computer with a potentially infected virus. I have described what the situation of the computer is at the beginning of this thread. i cannot access anything other than the "Dell System Recovery Options" Screen by pressing f8 when i boot up the PC. I have no access to a start menu, i have no access to disk management... nothing except the CMD menu that i acquired by the options. I do not have a memory stick. all i have is an external harddrive. I installed malwarebytes onto this external harddrive in hopes to be able to run this program to the infected computer. My problem now is trying to execute the program but i do not know how to do that because i do not know how to access my external harddrive via CMD.

Open a copy of Diskpart, and type list disk. Find your external HD, and type select disk n, n being the number of the drive. Then type list volume. Your letter should be listed.
