My taskbar keeps freezing...

I just got a new HP laptop with Windows 7 for Christmas and I was working on it yesterday and it was fine and I was loving it! Then this morning, suddenly my computer wanted to install a BUNCH of updates and every time I restarted for an update, it would want to install MORE after. It was really annoying! I also noticed how my taskbar keeps freezing too... The only way I can get it to unfreeze is to reboot, log off, or put my computer to sleep and then turn it back on again. It's REALLY annoying and even when I do, it takes 30 seconds for the taskbar to just freeze again. Sometimes the little blue spinning loading thingy comes up, but sometimes it doesn't. The only thing that freezes is my taskbar and not anything else. Like right now, it's frozen and it's annoying...
And everytime it freezes, in the menu on the very right of the taskbar (not sure what that is called) a little 6 pointed star comes up, and then whenever I put my computer to sleep, and then turn it back on again, the star disappears but it always appears whenever my taskbar freezes.

I'm not sure what to do this is really aggravating me...

Sorry, I'm not so sure where to post this... I'm new and I just want to get this fixed asap...

Leda Hi and welcome

You can turn off updates, uninstall those that have been installed. Did the problem start immediately after the updates?
