Recent Problems

Since all the information I posted is gone, thanks to my thumb clicking the back button while in the middle of typing [laptop], this is going to be short and sweet. My tower turns on, but no signal comes to the monitor, and the keyboard and mouse recieve no power whatsoever. I've tried everything I could think of, without success. Please help me ASAP. And by ASAP I mean ASAP. Thank you.

*Note: Please be noob-friendly as to computer terms. I know what some are, but very little.

EDIT: Now, the tower won't turn on either. Even though the power is plugged in.

Hello Fang, Welcome!

How do you know the tower is on? Check the power connection to your motherboard.

Also, how long has this been happening?

This has been happening just for today. [12/31/09] And what do you mean by check the power?? The power cable is inserted into the tower.

Sounds a bit like a power supply problem.
One way of testing the PSU is to unplug everything from your PSU including your motherboard, HDD and so on....

Also remove extra add on cards if you have any. Now plug your MB power back in and just have 1 stick of memory and your graphics card plugged in. check if it boots up.
If it boots up then your PSU might be OK. Next thing to do is to plug in each device 1 at a time. If after plugging in a device you find that it won't boot up anymore then it could be a faulty device.

Although this is a basic test it can sometimes help. Worst case scenario is that your MB/CPU is stuffed... but try these suggestions first.

PS. Please be careful when performing these actions, if you feel the slightest bit apprehensive then rather leave it up to a professional to look at as you could make it worse.

Open up the case and look inside. While you are in there, make sure all the cables are plugged in securely.

Oh, and my motherboard is a red MSI N1996

Boy, it is really hard to diagnose this over the internet.

Adding to the complications is that most power supplies only have 1 motherboard plug.

After you open the case, observe where the power cable from the wall goes in. Then find the cable that plugs into the motherboard from there. That cable is the power cable.

Make 100% sure it is plugged into the motherboard securely. Note: these plugs go in hard. They require a lot of pressure.

If it still does not work, I can't help anymore. You can wait for others to reply, but my best advice would be to take it to a repair shop. They have the resources to test your Power Supply, and replace it if necessary.
