Various BSOD crashes on new computer

Hi all,

This is my first time posting, so I'll try to include all relevant information and be as detailed as possible. Please let me know if I need to include anything else.

I recently bought a Gateway SX2802-03 from J&R around two months ago. A short while after I bought it, I began to notice random BSODs.

The process would begin like this - I would typically start to notice it as I was watching a streaming video online, or if I was playing a game with audio. The audio would gradually begin to deteriorate (clicks & buzzes, here and there, graduating up to very harsh, noisy static-y sounds). My cursor would then move jerkily across the screen when I would move it with the mouse. In general, I would notice the various programs taking longer to open or do anything until my whole computer crashed.

When I called Gateway tech support, they diagnosed it as a corrupted file that needed to be fixed by re-installing windows. I did this over the weekend, and roughly two days after doing so, I had my first BSOD, the details of which were the same as the ones before the restore.

I'm including the information presented for the last BSOD (this morning), as well as the previous two dmp files. Not sure if this is relevant, but I had the first crash yesterday morning...I continued to run my computer all day, and did not experience another. This morning, I had my computer up for around an hour when I had the second crash.

My security system is PC Tools Antivirus + Spyware.

STOP 0x124 errors
This is an error that your CPU reports to Windows. They're difficult to interpret, and the results of the interpretation aren't very helpful.

Most often caused by hardware problems (bad drivers, incompatible drivers/hardware, broken hardware)

THanks for the information. Checked the link, and I can pretty much eliminate any of those as possible fixes. Since my comp is only about 60 days old, I'll probably just shoot for a replacement, or whatever my warranty can provide.

If they'll take it back - go for it.
But FYI - these systems don't come from the factory with BSOD's normally
And especially not with STOP 0x124's

It'll sure be a lot easier than troubleshooting each and every component.
For your benefit later on, I'd keep a list of everything that you install for the next month or two (in case the STOP 0x124 occurs on the new system).

Any idea if any of these might be the culprit?

It depends on how old they are (and if they're certified for Win7)
The drivers loaded in the BSOD files are all up-to-date - so it's not likely to be a matter of outdated programs.

FWIW - I have experienced STOP 0x124 errors due to an improperly seated video card.

Unfortunately, there's no clues about this that we can see.
I'd suspect things that you've installed/changed/updated recently.
But, if it was something done earlier - and then was "sprung" by a Windows Update - you'll have troubles in locating it.

The best suggestion is to return it.
Then next best is to reinstall Windows with the System Recovery disks that the system should have asked you to make when you first turned it on. (BTW - if it still gives STOP 0x124's then, it's most likely a hardware problem and should be covered under your warranty)

Looks like it's indeed a hardware problem. Re-installed Windows 7 over the weekend, and didn't install any programs, just the updates. Got my first crash on Monday Morning. I'll be shipping it off tomorrow.

Oddly enough, it seemed to take the exact same length of time for the first crash to occur. Both times I reinstalled were on a Saturday, and my first crash was on Monday morning.

Anyways, thanks for all the help, hopefully the hardware service will fix everything.

Got my PC back from the people at Acer/Gateway just a few days ago. Only thing that came back with it was a sheet of paper saying that they "thoroughly tested system, could not duplicate customer issue". I ran it normally without changing anything for a few days and on the 3rd or 4th day, it had its first crash. Same M.O. to the crash, same everything. I've re-installed windows, without installing the windows updates, or anything other than the bare factory settings. All this leads me to a few questions:

1. Has it been common for the Windows updates to cause repeated crashes?
2. Are computer manufacturers typically good about replacing faulty towers with new or refurbished ones? Or is this possibly due to the OS itself with, or without updates.

Also to computerplus, I tried looking for the RAC file, but could not find it.

Alright...just got my latest crash, with the completely unchanged factory settings. I suppose my only option now is to demand that Acer replace this unit with a new or refurbished one (unless anybody else can think of anything more reasonable). I'm going to include my latest .dmp file, just in case it reveals anything new.
