I would do the ram first. Then worry about the update. But if you want to do the update, you can just give it a try.

Checking for updates worked just fine. I will test the RAM tonight because I need to get to work here and I need this PC.

Here's my only problem: Should I attempt to take out the "good" stick and put it in the "bad" one? Or should I first run a test with the "good" one, then put it into the DIMM_3 port and test again?

Lets try the second approach. If it comes out bad, we have to make sure it is the port, however.

Thanks a ton Richard. I'll get back to later tonight after I get some time to try it all again. How much time should I run that Memtest program? One hour, two hours, over night again?

Official publication from MS, it says overnight and I agree.

I am willing to take as much time as needed to help you out. In the event that I am not available, others, just as helpful will help out. If you do post and no one else is available, I will post as soon as possible. I just wanted you to know I will not just leave you hanging.

Once the memory problem is corrected. I suggest we use the computer normally and see if that was the source of all our problems. If it still hangs, when using update, we can look into that.

Thanks a lot for all your assistance. It's greatly appreciated. Plus I learned a few things. Seven was running fine. I'm doing some VB things, I may try and do them in 7. I'll let you know what happens. Tonight I'll run the memory test again and post results tomorrow.
